The 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup of cricket is taking place between 3-20 October in the United Arab Emirates, where defending champions Australia are the team to beat.

Australia have won six of the eight editions to date, including three WT20 World Cups in a row. They face India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in Group A.

England won the inaugural competition in 2009, and they are in Group B alongside Bangladesh, Scotland, South Africa, and West Indies, who were triumphant in 2016.

Following the group matches (3-15 October), the top two teams from each group progress to the semi-finals on 17-18 October before the final on 20 October.

In T20 cricket, each team bats for one inning of 20 overs, consisting of six balls per over. The toss of a coin decides which team will bat first, and they are then listed first on the scorecard. The opposition then aim to better the score to win the match. A full game typically takes just over three hours.

T20 is one of three forms of international cricket, alongside test cricket, which sees action for around six hours per day for five days, and One-Day International (ODI), which lasts 50 overs per team and is usually around eight hours in duration.

The T20 format will feature at the next Olympic Games at LA28, the first time in 128 years that cricket will be contested at the Olympics.
