A San Antonio mother hopes an SAPD report will bring clarity to an incident that has her son in the hospital during the holiday
SAN ANTONIO – A 13-year-old boy is recovering in the intensive care unit after a crash three days before Christmas.
The 13-year-old and his friend were riding motorbikes in a Southeast Side neighborhood when they missed a stop sign and collided with a truck. Both of them were sent to the hospital.
Melissa Munoz, the mother of one of the boys, told KSAT her son has been in the ICU since Dec. 22 when the crash happened.
The two 13-year-old boys approached the intersection of East Palfrey Street and Belford Drive on their motorbikes and drove through a stop sign.
A truck that approached the intersection and had the right of way also drove toward the intersection. The two boys hit the truck, which later drove away from the intersection.
According to video from a neighbor’s camera, the truck returned to the intersection approximately a minute and 15 seconds later. Both front-seat occupants in the truck appeared to get out of the vehicle and walked up to the boys, the video showed.
“My son was in the middle of the street screaming for help,” Melissa Munoz said. “I got the call that my son was crying. It was sirens in the back(ground). ‘Mom, mom. I’ve been hurt. I’ve been hurt.‘”
Although the boys did not have the right of way, Munoz said she still could not believe her son had to spend Christmas in the ICU.
“It’s a mother’s worst pain,” Munoz said. “A mother’s worst nightmare.”
Munoz said she is thankful several neighbors stepped in to help her son while he was injured in the street.
She is hoping her son can heal quickly and return home soon.
“There’s this lady that I could never (say) ‘thank you’ enough,” Munoz said. “She stood there. She saw the whole thing. She called an ambulance, called the police. She did not move from my son’s side.”
KSAT requested a police report of the incident. Munoz said she has also requested the police report, as well.
As of Friday, KSAT has yet to receive a copy of it.
Munoz hopes the report can help her better understand why the driver of the truck initially fled the scene.
