AC Milan secured an important 2-1 win over struggling Roma to keep tabs on Juventus and Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

Yacine Adli was on target for his first Milan goal, while Olivier Giroud struck in the second half to double the advantage.

Leandro Paredes pulled a goal back from the spot with 20 minutes on the clock, but it would only be a consolation as Theo Hernandez added a third late on to wrap up maximum points for Milan.

It took the home side just 11 minutes to find the opener, as 23-year-old Adli cleverly shifted the ball onto his left boot before drilling a low shot home from 18 yards.

Giroud was alert in the box to latch onto Simon Kjaer’s headed cross to nod the ball beyond Mile Svilar from close range to double Milan’s advantage.

Jose Mourinho’s side were given lifeline when Lorenzo Pellegrini drew a foul from Davide Calabria to win a penalty, which Paredes slammed down the middle of Mike Maignan’s net.

As Roma pushed for an equaliser, Milan found their third when Hernandez’s vicious shot ricocheted off the underside of the bar before bulging the net.

The result means Milan remain in third spot, nine points off leaders Inter and four off Juventus, who have a game in hand.

Lazio secured a fourth successive win in Serie A for the first time since April to beat Lecce and continue their bid for European football.

Felipe Anderson has had an eye for an assist this season, but the former West Ham midfielder put the ball in the net himself on Sunday to score the only goal of the game.

After a well-worked move into the box, Anderson slammed home Luis Alberto’s threaded pass on the edge of the six-yard box to give the home side the lead.

Lazio held on for the three points, which helped them catch fourth-place Fiorentina who were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw at home to Udinese.

The relegation contenders picked up a crucial point away to the Champions League chasers in a boost to their survival hopes, with M'Bala Nzola’s late penalty denying the visitors all three points.

Sandi Lovric gave Udinese an early lead following a rapid counter-attack to draw first blood, before Lucas Beltran levelled matters just before the hour mark.

Florian Thauvin put Gabriele Cioffi back in control with a strike 17 minutes from time, but Fiorentina were given a lifeline in the 85th minute when Joao Ferreira looked to have handled the ball.

Referee Luca Pairetto initially waved away strong shouts for a spot-kick, but once VAR had intervened, eventually awarded a penalty which Nzola duly converted to spare the hosts' blushes.

Fellow relegation strugglers Cagliari beat sixth place Bologna 2-1 to pull themselves out of the danger zone.

Riccardo Orsolini put Bologna ahead in the first half but Andrea Petagna had the match level going into the break to give the hosts a lifeline.

Cagliari, who were without a win in five going into the weekend, forced an own goal out of 21-year-old defender Riccardo Calafiori to move ahead and hold on for a vital three points.
