Ireland legend tips new Celtic star Adam Idah to thrive under ...

Adam Idah has been told to make the most of his Scottish adventure by firing Celtic to title glory.

The Republic of Ireland striker last night sealed a deadline day loan to the Glasgow giants from Norwich City.

And while there is no scope just now to make the deal permanent, the two clubs could hold talks this summer if Idah proves a hit.

The Corkman, 22, - who has scored three times in 22 appearances for Ireland - was struggling for starts at Norwich despite scoring seven goals this season.

Italian side Verona submitted a loan-to-buy bid that was rejected earlier in the week, but Celtic have got their man.

And Ireland legend Shay Given - who was a youth at Celtic - has urged Idah to seize the opportunity.

“We all know how big a club Celtic are, so it’s exciting for him,” he said. “It’s a brilliant move as they’re going for the championship and he could win a league medal.

“He has three or four months to really prove himself and a title would be very special to have in his locker.”

And Given is backing Idah - who smashed 34 goals in his 61 underage Ireland appearances from U15s to U21s - to hit the ground running under Brendan Rodgers.

“I know Brendan relatively well and I think he's a top quality coach who will play to Adam's strengths,” he added.

“Yes, Adam could probably add a few more goals to his game but in spurts with the Ireland jersey on, you could see he was a handful for a lot of defences.

“For any striker, it’s just about playing regularly and a team like Celtic, who are expected to win every week, will create a lot of chances for him.

Meanwhile, Given reckons Evan Ferguson will have to get used to dips in form - but has no fears for the Ireland ace.

The teenage sensation is one of the hottest properties in the Premier League and is on the radar of Europe’s biggest clubs.

His rise to stardom has been electric but Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi claimed recently that Ferguson can play better than he’s doing at the moment.

He has seven goals this season - one of those was for Ireland - but hasn’t hit the net since November’s win away to Nottingham Forest.

Ireland legend Given believes the next Ireland manager will build his team around Ferguson because he’s such a talent.

But he feels the teenager will just have to get used to the highs and lows of being a Premier League ace.

Given said: “Any young player is going to have their ups and downs. So much has been written and said about Evan at a young age and there's going to be dips in form.

“The problem is when you're so highly thought of, the dips in form will fill lots of newspaper columns and air time on radio and TV.

“But I also feel Brighton are struggling as a team and Evan is just getting some headlines on the back of that.”

Ex-Newcastle and Manchester City star Given added: “He's had a few injuries as well which I don't think have helped him.

“He’s only young and the pace and power of the league is so high. It can take your body time to harden up to the demands of the Premier League.

“Defenders are also more aware of him and what he's done up to now. But I've no concerns about him going forward.

“You'll have dips in form in your career but it's exciting for the new Ireland manager to have a player like that to work with.”
