Peter Schmeichel said he "could've cried" after watching Liverpool thrash Manchester United at Old Trafford alongside Sir Alex Ferguson on Sunday.

The Reds completely overpowered their hosts in the 3-0 derby demolition, as Arne Slot made it three wins from three to get his Liverpool reign off to the perfect start this season.

Despite seeing Trent Alexander-Arnold's opener ruled out for offside, the visitors pushed on and scored two quick-fire goals through Luis Diaz in the space of seven minutes to head into half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

But things would only get worse for Erik ten Hag's side just over 10 minutes after the restart after Mohamed Salah added a third in the 56th minute, capping off a fine individual performance by finishing off a devastating counter-attack to put Liverpool into a three-goal lead and effectively kill off the tie.

It certainly seemed like history repeating itself inside Old Trafford following United's disastrous Premier League campaign last season, and Red Devils legend Schmeichel could barely cope as he watched the mayhem unfold in front of him alongside a fellow Man United great.

"I've sat with Sir Alex today. It's really sad. I mean, what he did for this football club," Schmeichel began telling Optus Sport after the game. "And to sit with him and (know) he's watching this. That for me is really, really sad. It is. That he's watching that. Because he did something really extraordinary with this football club.

"And all of that is not there anymore. The club changed. Then you have somebody coming in running the club. They've supported the manager. They've given him money. Now we've played three games. We've lost two. I don't see the difference. I mean, I could nearly cry because of that, because I want this team to do really, really well."

While Liverpool secured its third victory of the season with the 3-0 win, Man United was left with just three points from its first three games following back-to-back defeats, despite spending another $262million (£200m/€238m) this summer.

The result saw the Red Devils fall to 14th in the Premier League standings, just two points above the relegation zone with a -3 goal difference. At the same stage of last season, they were eighth after winning two of their first three games, while they were again 14th the season before after also losing two of their first three games.

The victory in that third game of the 2022-23 season, however, was against Liverpool. Goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford either side of half-time were enough to secure a 2-1 victory for the hosts at Old Trafford, despite Salah's late header to halve the deficit.

But two years on and it is the side who has spent just $13.3million (£10.1m/€12.0m) on one new player for this season and is coping with the departure of its long-serving manager which is excelling. Man United, on the other hand, is still struggling to show signs of improvement more than two years into its long-term plan.
