Golf Tips: A 10/1 pick for the Alfred Dunhill Links

3 Oct 2024

After a playoff defeat in Spain on Sunday, Jon Rahm tees it up again on the DP World Tour this week, this time at the ‘Home of Golf’, where he is the co-favourite along with Rory McIlroy. The Tour’s only pro-am competition will see professionals and celebrities take on the Old Course at St Andrews, plus Carnoustie and Kingsbarns before a 54-hole cut.

Tyrrell Hatton to win

A Thursday 74 abruptly ended Tyrrell Hatton’s victory chances at Open de Espana, but his next three rounds were excellent as the Englishman finished in a tie for 10th place. The performance in Madrid rounded off a great September for Hatton, who earned top-five berths in both Chicago and Dallas with LIV Golf.

Hatton has one title to his name this year – a runaway triumph at LIV Golf Nashville – and the 32-year-old can double that tally at an event where he has twice tasted success.

The format of the tournament and the layout of the courses undoubtedly suit Hatton. He won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2016 and 2017, before falling just one stroke short of a threepeat in 2018.

Tom McKibbin Top 10 Finish

Having registered two top-10 finishes in his last four outings, Tom McKibbin looks a good bet to do the same again at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after coming in a tie for 14th in Scotland a year ago.

The Northern Irishman has praised his short game in recent weeks, and what used to be a weakness for McKibbin is now becoming one of his great strengths. His putting and scrambling helped him climb into a tie for 10th at the BMW PGA Championship, while his driving remains exemplary.

At just 21 years old, he is becoming a complete player who looks ideally suited to a test like this week’s.

Sanderson Farms Championship

Patrick Fishburn (each-way)

It’s a weak PGA Tour field heading to the Country Club of Jackson for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Still, it makes for a fascinating betting heat, especially given the history of big-priced winners in Mississippi.

Both Sergio Garcia and Sam Burns ranked first for greens in regulation in their respective victories in 2020 and 2021. Only two winners at CC of Jackson in the last decade have done so without being in the top 10 for that statistic.

That is why Patrick Fishburn appeals as the main selection to earn his first PGA Tour title. Only Scottie Scheffler and Jhonattan Vegas have found greens at a greater rate this year, and following a third-place finish last time out, the American should shine on his Sanderson Farms debut. His latest results are 3-MC-6-3-15, and if he can continue that consistency, he could be in the mix for a top 60 place in the FedEx Cup Fall Points List and earn a spot at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.

Henrik Norlander Top European

The Top 125 ranked players at the end of the FedEx Cup Fall earn PGA TOUR Cards for next year. Currently positioned in 131st, Henrik Norlander could do with a strong showing in Mississippi and that is something he tends to provide.

On his last four visits to CC of Jackson, he has posted finishes of 2-24-4-4. The Swede lost out in a five-way playoff in 2023 after mistakes on the 14th and 16th holes cost him the chance to win in regulation time. Norlander is the seventh-best player on the Tour for greens in regulation this year, so it would be no fluke if he contends again at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
