GAME, SET AND MATCH! - MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 6-7 1-0 (11-9) GILLE/VLIEGEN

Andy Murray’s tennis career is not over yet!

The Scot’s double-act with Dan Evans comes up with the goods again to ensure they remain in the hunt for an Olympic medal. It ended up being almost as nerve-jangling as in R1 as they again saved match points – seven in total now in the tournament – to reach the quarter finals.

The GB pair will now meet either USA’s No.3 seeds Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz or Dutch pair Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Roger in the last eight.

MATCH TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 10-9 GILLE/VLIEGEN

It’s another turnaround for GB as Evo comes up trumps on Gille’s serve yet again and now GB have a third match point… Murray to serve – and Evo smashes it away!!!

MATCH TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 9-9 GILLE/VLIEGEN

TWO MATCH POINTS FOR BELGIUM!

Evo can’t follow up his serve and jabs long from the forecourt.

He does deliver on the his next serve to save one, but GB have to fend off another on Gille’s serve…

And they do! It's a super return when it matters most and Gille can only drill into the net.

MATCH TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 7-8 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Evo can’t control a volley off Vliegen’s rasping forehand down the line and the Belgian’s have the mini break at a massive moment in the match.

It’s Vliegen who delivers again on the next point with a short-angled crosscourt forehand winner, but Evo comes up trumps with a supreme return to feet to keep GB afloat.

MATCH TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 6-6 GILLE/VLIEGEN

The pendulum continues to swing just as it did in the Set 2 breaker.

Belgium scrap their way into the lead but a couple of shocking volleys allow GB to reassert some semblance of authority.

It last mere seconds as Murray drags a rushed backhand low into the net and it’s still anyone’s match.

MATCH TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 3-3 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Murray gobbles up the pieces at the net with a clinical smash to open and it’s GB who earn the mini break when Gille blocks the Scot’s fizzed forehand long.

The two-time Olympic singles Gold medallist then shows quick reactions to dodge Vliegen’s heat-seeking missile as it flies off the island.

However, GB can’t keep their advantage as they hand back the mini break before Muzza scorches a crosscourt return a millimetre wide.

SET! - MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 6-7 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Supreme hands from Evo forces the error and sees GB swat away set point. A fabulous body serve from Murray switches the pressure the other way and it’s Match Point No.2

But, no wait, .... somehow Belgium survive!

A miscued block volley from Gille lands in and then there's drama as GB think there's a net cord bleep, but the umpire isn't interested.

Evans then double faults on SP No.2 and the Belgian duo take the breaker 10-8. Incredible!

TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 6-6 GILLE/VLIEGEN

There are a couple of mini breaks that see the lead exchanged before Evo lures a lob long with a controlled volley and it’s match point GB…

But ... Muzza can’t do enough with the return and we will have another change of ends.

TIE-BREAK LATEST! - MURRAY/EVANS 3-3 GILLE/VLIEGEN

The Brits snare an instant mini break but they let it slip early when Evo double faults.

Murray earns another with a wrong-footing forehand down the line but then Muzza also double faults (!) and it means it is all to play for and tied at the change of ends.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 6-6 GILLE/VLIEGEN

There’s a brief concern for GB when they drop the opening point but once Evo mops up a smash at the net they don’t look back and it’s full speed ahead to the breaker.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 5-6 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Gille follows suit as he clocks up a love hold with a lovely one-handed backhand down the line.

Over to Murray now… He must hold to force the breaker or we will head straight into a Match tie-break (first to 10).

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 5-5 GILLE/VLIEGEN

That’s mighty clean from Evo and in the blink of an eye we are all square deep in the second.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 4-5 GILLE/VLIEGEN

It’s a real rollercoaster and the most entertaining game of the set by far.

GB think their chance has gone when Evo lobs an inch long and Muzza drags a backhand into the net.

However, the Scot conjures up a supreme return to make deuce before Evo earns a rare BP in this set with some sharp work in the forecourt.

The Brits sense it’s their moment but can’t convert a second BP either as Vliegen produces clutch serves to wipe them both out.

The Belgian has been erratic at times tonight but he continues to deliver hefty serves when it matters most and somehow he navigates his way out of very choppy waters.

'Who wants a little more of Nadalcaraz?'

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 4-4 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Murray takes care of business on serve once more with a hold to 15 and it feels like we are heading towards a breaker…

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 3-4 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Evo jumps up and down in frustration as Muzza slaps a make-able return just long.

It came after Dan had pulled off a magical, improvised pass down the line to threaten at 40-30.

The Belgians are delighted with the donation and maintain that scoreboard advantage heading into the pressure part of the set.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 3-3 GILLE/VLIEGEN

It’s a bit of a let off for Evo as Vliegen struggles to fire a return beyond the net.

When he does engage on a short ball from the Brummie, he thrashes a forehand low into the net and a hold to 15, that could have been more awkward, means we are all square once again.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 2-3 GILLE/VLIEGEN

The Brits strike first but it’s not the springboard to the breakthrough they are hoping for.

Gille reels off four points in a row and the Belgians keep their noses in front with the minimum of fuss.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 2-2 GILLE/VLIEGEN

That’s an excellent service game from Murray – and it’s a case in point that the Belgian pair aren’t offering enough on the return if they are to turn this match in their favour.

Evo chucks in a smash for good measure and GB are well-placed at two apiece in the second.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 1-2 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Still on serve early doors in Set 2.

The Belgians will be eager to keep that board ticking in their favour and allow the pressure of playing catch-up to tell.

They haven’t quite done enough on the return so far in this match although there have been a couple of wobbles from Evo that they almost exploited.

MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 0-1 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Evo sweeps a tame backhand return into the net to let Vliegen off the hook at 30-30.

GB were in the hunt to deliver a significant blow there, but Muzza does the same on the return seconds later and it’s the Belgians who are up and running first in Set 2.

SET! - MURRAY/EVANS 6-3 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Dan and Andy love a bit of drama.

Things are going swimmingly at 30-0 but events begin to unravel when Gille’s opportunistic volley catches the baseline.

Muzza’s defensive, block volley then crashes into the net and suddenly there’s a bit of tension in the air.

A fortuitous return winner leaves Evo hurling his racquet to the floor in frustration, but he comes up clutch on serve to press to deuce.

Brilliant hands at the net from Murray earn a first set point but Evo double faults and they have to reset and go again.

They do just that with the Brummie regaining rhythm and hitting his spots on serve to ensure the Brits get the job done at the second time of asking.

MURRAY/EVANS 5-3 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Evo raids the net and takes no prisoners with a body volley but it doesn’t inspire the recovery from 40-15 down and Gille holds firm to pose the serve-out question.

MURRAY/EVANS 5-2 GILLE/VLIEGEN

There’s no doubt this is a much more assured display from GB after their R1 ‘Great Escape.’

Evo back pedals expertly to hammer away and overhead before Muzza lands another first serve to ease through a hold to 15.

One more hold and this first set will be theirs...

MURRAY/EVANS 4-2 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Murray looks towards GB’s team box and gestures in frustration as he sizzles a return long at 30-15.

It follows a crosscourt forehand from Evo that almost caught fire and had his opponent ducking at the net.

Sadly for the Brits, that was as good as it got and solid serving helped the Belgians over the line to stay in contention.

MURRAY/EVANS 4-1 GILLE/VLIEGEN

Evans follows suit with a ruthless clean hold and GB remain on course in this opener.

MURRAY/EVANS 3-1 GILLE/VLIEGEN

It’s the most routine service game of the match thus far and very much-needed from the Belgian perspective as they edge on to the board with a hold to 15.

MURRAY/EVANS 3-0 GILLE/VLIEGEN

This GB pair don’t like doing things easy, do they?

Muzza’s serve comes under the cosh for 0-30 but the two-time Olympic singles champion responds with improved deliveries, allowing Evo to emphatically smash them to parity before a clutch volley down the middle and an audacious lob from the former World No.1 sees the Brits consolidate in style.

BREAK! - MURRAY/EVANS 2-0 GILLE/VLIEGEN

A stunning start to the service game sees the Brits take turns to deliver on the return before Muzza darts to his left and digs out a backhand crosscourt drive that forces the error at the net and tees triple break point.

The Scot rasps another return into the net on the first but Evo produces a mesmerising lob that clips the rear edge of the baseline to get it done on the second.

MURRAY/EVANS 1-0 GILLE/VLIEGEN

It’s interesting to see Murray repeatedly checking with Evo from the net, asking the Brummie where he’s serving, where he will crouch and basically what the plan is.

The desire for clarity doesn’t pay off initially as Evans twice misses the island on the volley and the Brits need a clutch serve and some dominance at the net from deuce to stave off two break points.

Eventually Evans’ serve comes to the rescue and GB are up and running with a hard-fought hold.
