Lille president provides reassuring Angel Gomes update

Angel Gomes (23) has been hospitalised after suffering a serious head injury during Lille OSC’s 2-0 victory over Stade de Reims on Saturday evening.

The England youth international was left unconscious after a collision with Reims’ Amadou Koné and remained on the pitch for over 30 minutes before being evacuated on a stretcher and taken straight to hospital. Koné was shown a straight red card for the incident. The game did restart, with 35 minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

Post-match Lille president Olivier Létang provided a positive update on Gomes. “It’s good news,” said Létang, speaking to new Ligue 1 broadcaster DAZN. “We were really scared. The news wasn’t good at the start. In the end, he left the stadium having regained consciousness. He could understand, speak and could move his arms and legs.”

Létang added that Gomes has even asked if he can play next Saturday against SCO Angers. The president, understandably, said that they would await the results of further tests before making any decision on when he may be able to be reintegrated. “We should have a happy ending,” said Létang.

Lille, in their first Ligue 1 game under Bruno Genesio, beat Luka Elsner’s Reims thanks to goals from Bafodé Diakité and Jonathan David.
