Annabel Croft and Johannes Radebe turned the heat up with a Samba however their scores saw them placed at the bottom of the leaderboard with a mark of 32 out of 40. Their Strictly co-stars burst out in a chant following the judges remarks.

The professionals all chanted 'undermarked' as BBC viewers soon took to social media following their performance as they seemed to be in agreement that the Tennis champion should have been marked higher.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Annabel Croft is bloody marvellous. 57 years old, lost her husband in the summer, has picked herself up and is dancing her socks off she's my winner. #StrictlyComeDancing."

Someone else wrote: "No acting classes. No dance training whatsoever. Take a bow Annabel. #strictly #StrictlyComeDancing #annabel #johannes #scd."

"Annabel is just wonderful! Lots of energy today. She has come from beginner to greatness! #StrictlyComeDancing," quipped another as a fourth wrote: "Who is your Strictly winner? Mine is Annabel she deserved a higher score #StrictlyComeDancing."

Meanwhile, Bobby Brazier and his partner Dianne Buswell kicked the night off with a dazzling performance to Mack The Knife by Bobby Darin which shot them off to a good start with the highest scoring quickstep across the competition.

Head judge Shirley Ballas called The EastEnders star, 20, the “king of ballroom” and said: “What a way to open the semi-final," which was followed by Layton Williams and his partner Nikita Kuzmin taking on an emotional Rhumba performance.

At the beginning of the programme, presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman reminded viewers that there was no public vote last week after Nigel Harman pulled out due to an injury.

This means that the scores have been carried over to this week and will be added to tonight’s scores.
