BBC viewers claim to have found a 'replacement' for Clare Balding for the broadcaster's Wimbledon coverage, after being massively impressed by Annabelle Croft during Sunday's men's final.

Having been brought into replace massively popular host Sue Barker, who quits last year after three decades in charge, Clare had incredibly big shoes to fill and, while plenty of people who've tuned into Wimbledon over the last two weeks have praised her professionalism, others have found fault with some of her comments, including a badly timed one about BBC scheduling, just as the channel cut off an interview with eventual winner Alcaraz as he made the quarter finals at SW19 for the first time, in order to show a repeat of DIY SOS.

Clare was at the helm of live action on the final day of Wimbledon as Alcaraz, 20, beat seven time champion Novak Djokovic in a five set thriller, with Andrew Castle and Todd Woodbridge on commentary duties. As is tradition with the world famous tournament, both runner up Djokovic and victor Alcaraz were interviewed on court, as they received their silverware in front of a packed crowd, from Kate, Princess of Wales.

The job of conducting the interviews fell on the shoulders of former British player Annabel Croft and, seeing her chat to the two finalists, a number of viewers took to Twitter to say she should be the new full time lead host for Wimbledon on the BBC going forward. Making that judgement, one fan posted: "I like Clare Balding but I think @Annabel_Croft would be an excellent anchor going forward. She’s terrific, she has a real warmth about her just like Sue did."

In agreement, a second tweeted: "She should be the Wimbledon anchor, Clare Balding should be number two.....," with another Annabel backer, writing: "@Annabel_Croft to replace #clarebalding Far more knowledgeable, engaging, empathetic and relevant"
