A man found dead in his home, just days after he was arrested in relation to the murder of Kyran Durnin, has been named locally.
Anthony Maguire (36) was found dead in his home in Drogheda, Co Louth earlier today.
His death has been considered a personal tragedy and foul play is not suspected.
Maguire was arrested by gardaí as part of the murder probe last Thursday but was released without charge on Friday evening.
This photo shows Maguire after he was released following a 24-hour detention period.
It’s understood Maguire was known to tragic Kyran who is the subject of a murder investigation.
He was also known to the woman (20s) who was questioned last week in relation to the murder probe before being released without charge.
Kyran was reported missing in August, however it has since emerged that gardai have not been able to identify a positive sighting of him since May 2022.
Maguire was suspected of a role in attempting to cover up the boy’s disappearance by presenting another child as Kyran during interviews with social workers.
A house linked to Maguire was one of two searched by gardai last week with an extensive dig taking place in the back garden.
A specialist cadaver dog also assisted gardaí with this search.
However, it’s believed nothing of evidential value was found and it’s understood Maguire made no admissions “of any significance” while being questioned, according to sources.
A source told the Sunday World that the man's death is not being treated as suspicious.
A garda spokesman said an autopsy will now be carried out to determine the cause of death.
"Earlier today, Tuesday, 17th December 2024, gardaí and emergency services were alerted following the discovery of a body of a male aged in his 30s in a domestic residence in Drogheda, County Louth.
"The local Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The outcome of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
Last week, a woman in her twenties, known to Kyran, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday and questioned before being released on Wednesday.
Kyran was first reported missing at the end of August, but gardaí believe that he was killed or murdered two years earlier.
School records were quickly searched by gardaí but it was established that the last school Kyran attended was under the impression that he was to move to a different school as the school year ended. However, there are no records of him having attended elsewhere.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris last week told reporters he believes Kyran died when he was six, and whatever happened to him may have occurred in May 2022, after the last confirmed sightings of him in school.
Tusla has said it received no referrals of concern about Kyran’s welfare or attendance at school between 2022 and 2024. But by early 2024, Tusla began to take an interest in Kyran again having being involved in his earlier life.
