The hour-long programme featured a number of shocking and emotional moments for Anton, 57, most notably when he revealed he had been stabbed in the leg and stomach by his alcoholic and abusive father.

As well as opening up about his difficult childhood, Anton also became emotional when he spoke about his mum's poor health recently, and the passing of former Strictly judge Len Goodman.

However, there were a number of lighter moments during the interview as well, particularly when Kate brought up the fact Anton used to work as a mattress salesman.

The show interviewed Anton's former boss, who recalled how the dancer taught him to Foxtrot, which lead to him dancing with his now wife.

Anton said after watching his VT: "He is about the nicest man I’ve ever met in my entire life.

“He got into my car one day and I’ve got all these parking fines sitting in the passenger seat. He said, ‘What’s all this?’

"I said they’re parking fines, I’m not paying them. Anyway, he scooped them all up and paid them for me.”

Kate asked: "Have you paid him back?"

Anton's mouth twitched and glanced away briefly before he replied: "Yes,"

Kate immediately pointed her finger at Anton and cried: "“That’s a lie! That is a lie" as the audience laughed.

With a cheeky smile Anton defended himself saying: “I taught him how to dance! That’s priceless.”

Kate Garraway's Life Stories is available on ITVX.
