Another spectacular goal from super sub Jhon Duran and some goalkeeping heroics from Emilio Martinez earned Aston Villa a famous Champions League victory over six-times winners Bayern Munich on a memorable night at Villa Park.

Duran took only 11 minutes to make his mark after replacing Ollie Watkins with the sort of strike that is becoming his trademark.

The Colombian international timed his run onto Pau Torres' through ball to perfection and then struck a first time shot over a stunned Manuel Neuer from 25 yards and into the top corner.

It was as good as his long range effort against Everton last month and took his tally to six this season five of them from the bench.

But more importantly it gave Villa a second successive win in the group stages to put them well on course to qualify for the knock out stages.

Martinez deserves to share star billing with Duran for a series of vital saves - none better than his late stop to keep out Harry Kane's header.

It was a first defeat this season for Bayern who had come into the game with six wins and a draw form their previous seven games with 30 goals scored, nine of them in their opening group game against Dinamo Zagreb, when Kane helped himself to four.

And it embellished Villa boss Unai Emery's reputation as a master European tactician. Emery of course has won the Europa League four times - three times with Villareal and once with Sevilla as well as guiding Villareal to the Champions League semi-finals. Now it looks like he could repeat his magic with Villa, starved of success for so long.

Bayern controlled much of the game but were kept at bay by some stubborn defending and Martinez's heroics.

Villa will also feel some sense of justice because Bayern should have been reduced to 10 men in the first half when Dayot Upecano somehow got away without a red card for two 'rugby-tackle' type challenges on Watkins.

Prince William and the heroes of the 1982 European Cup triumph were all guests for the Midland club's long-awaited first home game in Europe's top club competition for 41 years.

The high-level fixture may have been unfamiliar territory for Villa in recent times but there were plenty of familiar faces among their opponents - managed by former Manchester City captain and Burnley manager Vincent Kompany and included England captain Kane, Michael Olise, Leroy Sane and Eric Dier in their squad.

Bayern started the game looking like a team with players who have over 400 Champions League appearances between them compared to a handful in the Villa side.

Villa showed the six-times champions a little bit too much respect as Bayern took control and Martinez made a fine save from Kane early on although the flag eventually went up for offside.

But Bayern enjoyed a couple of huge let-offs in the first half. First Upemacano escaped what could easily have been a red card when he pulled Watkins to the ground when the Villa striker would have been clean through.

Neither referee Radu Petrescu or the VAR decided it was worthy of even a caution but moments later Upemecano committed the same foul on the same player and this time was booked leaving Villa quite rightly thinking it should, at the very least, have been a second caution and a dismissal.

Bayern had barely recovered from that good fortune when Villa defender Torres toe-poked the ball home after a goalmouth scramble but VAR intervened this time and ruled that Jacob Ramsey was just offside in the build-up to the goal.

For a spell Villa had Bayern were rattled and Amadou Onana fired a fine chance straight at Manuel Neuer.

But the Germans quelled the storm and Serge Gnabry got an earful from Kane for not shooting wildly over the bar instead of cutting the ball back to him.

Martinez then made a superb finer tip save to keep out Olise's curling long-range shot out of the top corner.

Villa had good reason to feel aggrieved with referee Petrescu once again when Kane wrestled Morgan Rogers to the ground but somehow escaped a caution.

Bayern dominated the second half but could not find a way through Villa's well-organised defence in which Torres, Diego Carlos and Ezra Konsa were outstanding.

And when they did find their way through they couldn't beat Martinez who first made a point blank stop from Serge Gnabry and then topped that with his acrobatic stop from Kane to spark wild celebrations at a frenzied Villa Park.
