Just over a month after Ayo Edebiri and Paul Mescal sparked rumors of both an IRL relationship and a forthcoming romantic comedy via just one (1) selfie together on St. Patrick's Day, and all is not lost for the possibility these two could become rom-com costars.

At Met Gala 2024, an Entertainment Tonight reporter asked the Bottoms and The Bear star, “What are the chances we can get you and Paul Mescal in a rom-com together?” To which Edebiri responded, “The chances are dependent on both of our schedules and if we get a good script.”

The reporter referenced the headlines that occurred after Edebiri and Mescal “ran into each other” — Edebiri's words — back in March. The photo of the pair made people realize the chemistry is potentially off the charts, cue: rom-com rumors.

Bestselling author Emily Henry added fuel to the fire when she reshared the photo on Instagram, as did screenwriter Yulin Kuang. Three of Henry's novels are currently in development, and Kuang is writing two of the screenplays — People We Meet on Vacation and Beach Read. Per Variety, her novel Book Lovers is being produced by the company behind Mescal's moving 2022 film Aftersun.

“I can’t confirm or deny anything with casting for any movie. I will say that those are two of my favorite ‘Irish’ actors,” Henry told Variety, referencing the ongoing joke that Edebiri is Irish. She continued, "I think that they would be amazing. I actually saw them being discussed [online] for several different roles — and I definitely have a favorite. But it’s fun, because different adaptations would either have one of them playing to type, or one of those adaptations would have them both playing to type, and one of them would have them both playing against type. It’s an interesting thing. I mean, they’re great, they could do anything.”
