Irish actor Barry Keoghan has been pictured on set of the new Peaky Blinders film for the first time - joining "good friend" Cillian Murphy for a feature-length chapter of the hit gangster drama.

The film is a continuation of the period show that ran for six series, following a family of Birmingham gangsters led by the infamous Tommy Shelby, played by Oscar-winning Cork man Cillian Murphy. Creator Steven Knight has bragged that the cast of the new movie is "mind-blowing."

Of the film Murphy has said: "“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me! It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans."

Those fans were overjoyed when they learned back in August that Keoghan would be joining the cast. Keoghan admitted to Entertainment Weekly that he was both excited and nervous to take on the highly-anticipated Peaky Blinders movie: "[I'm a] massive, massive fan of the show, and Cillian [Murphy]'s a good friend and I admire him as an actor as well," he said.

While Keoghan enjoys his ascent to worldwide fame, Murphy has told of how acting in Cork's Granary Theatre back in the day led to being scouted by director Christopher Nolan - kickstarting his own meteoric rise. Both Keoghan and Murphy now have Nolan films to their names - with Barry having starred in 2017's Dunkirk. Murphy meanwhile has racked up six collaborations with the director since 2005.

And with adulation for Oppenheimer still ringing in his ears, Murphy is already being tipped for yet another Oscar win for his performance in Small Things Like These, a big-screen adaptation of the novel by Irish author Claire Keegan. Murphy has credited his wife Yvonne for giving him the idea of adapting the novel.

In new pictures from the Peaky Blinders set, Keoghan's character trails behind a powerful looking Ada Thorne - nee Shelby - played by British actress Sophie Rundle. Ada took over the family operation at the end of the final season, when Tommy fled for a new life after being tricked into believing he was dying of a brain tumour.

She wore a stylish all-maroon outfit with a matching hat - and Keoghan also looked the part in typical Peaky Blinders uniform, donning a grey suit, an overcoat, and of course the flat cap that has become synonymous with the show.

Keoghan, who shot to worldwide fame with roles in Saltburn and Banshees of Inisherin, is known to make brief appearances in projects that he was previously a fan of. He surprised fans of Netflix series Top Boy when he made a three-episode appearance in the final season - and appeared for just a few minutes as the Joker in The Batman, against Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne.
