Bayer Leverkusen do the impossible: has any other team gone ...

Bayer Leverkusen

Having achieved what few others in history have, one can only nod in acknowledgment as Bayer Leverkusen take their rightful place among some of football’s greatest sides. Yet, one has to wonder how often this has been done and who are those teams that have established themselves as immortal.

Bayer Leverkusen can’t be beaten

It was just last week when Bayer Leverkusen confirmed their Bundesliga title victory with a 5-0 victory drubbing of Werder Bremen. It was a moment of both elation and relief as the weight of waiting years was finally released. Indeed, that was plain to see as the pitch was invaded following Florian Wirtz’s sensational hattrick for his team. There was of course also Xabi Alonso who has been lauded with praise for the way in which he has got the German outfit to play. Consider for a moment that this is the same team that was labeled ‘Neverkusen’, having never won a domestic title and for some time now looking as though they never would. Clearly, Alonso didn’t get the memo.

Yet, it’s not just about the fact that they’ve got their first title in the club’s history, is it? No, this is about the fact that Bayer Leverkusen have done something that few other sides in football have managed to do and that’s go unbeaten for an entire campaign. Mind you, the team is still in contention in the UEFA Europa League and quite frankly, looks to be a sure bet to win it as they are now set to face Italy’s Atalanta in the final. It doesn’t hurt that Alonso recently declared that he would like to remain in Germany, something that many have speculated would not be the case when next season rolls around. Below you can see the list of teams that have gone unbeaten across a season.

So, what does Bayer Leverkusen’s record look like this season and how does it match up with the other unbeaten teams of the past? For starters, there’s the domestic record which has seen them play 35 games, winning a staggering 29, while drawing 6 including an incredible last-minute equalizer against Borussia Dortmund. Of course, all of that was given official status on Saturday when the German champions defeated Augsburg in a match that ended 2-1 in their favor. At this point, the only games left are the aforementioned European final that will be played on Wednesday, May 22nd and the DFB-Pokal final against FCK that will be played on Saturday, May 25th. That’s to say, there is still more to be won for a team that’s already won it all.
