Fianna Fail’s Pat O’Toole will be returned as a councillor in the Ballymahon LEA for the third successive time.

With 714 first preferences, O’Toole lies in third place after the first count.

It’s a steady performance from the Forgney man.

“The old adage that hard work pays off is probably true,” he smiled.

“I am very pleased, but I got a great reception on the canvass,” he added.

On a disappointing weekend for Fianna Fail in Co. Longford, O’Toole is one of those who bucked the trend.

“Overall, it was a disappointing weekend for Fianna Fail and particularly in the Granard area,” he stated.

“However, I thought that Turlough McGovern would hold his strong vote in Granard,” O’Toole added.

On the plus side for the party, Mick Cahill will also be returned in Ballymahon with a strong vote and the party could take the third seat.

“We are battling for the third seat in Ballymahon (Sean Mimnagh),” O’Toole added.

Mimnagh was battling for a seat in a “crowded field” in the Lanesborough area, according to O’Toole.

“That is similar to the situation in Ballymahon in the 2019 election,” he commented.

While transfers can be “all over the place,” Cllr O’Toole thinks that in the Lanesborough part of the LEA, local transfers might help Sean Mimnagh get over the line.

“Transfers appear to be based in the area in Lanesborough,” he stated.

“It could be a long battle in Ballymahon, with the count not finishing up there until Tuesday in the 2019 elections,” he recalled.

“I wouldn’t rule out a recount,” he added.
