Child taken to hospital after being struck by vehicle

A child has been taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast after being struck by a vehicle in Co Down.

The single vehicle collision occurred on in the Carney Hall area of Newry on Wednesday afternoon.

Police, Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) crews and the Charity Air Ambulance were dispatched after a 999 call was made at 4.08pm.

An NIAS spokesperson said a Rapid Response Paramedic and an Emergency Crew attended the scene alongside a HEMS crew.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken by ambulance to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children,” they added.

Police have asked drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

The road is closed and there are diversions in place.
