In a post on X, Durkan wrote: "Alas, today wasn’t my day but it has been my privilege to represent the people of Kildare in Dáil Éireann for over 43 years."
The Dáil's longest serving TD, Fine Gael's Bernard Durkan, has lost his seat in Kildare North.
He gave 42 years of consecutive public service to Dáil Éireann.
He was eliminated in the final count that saw the last three seats filled.
His running mate, Joe Neville, took the fourth seat in the constituency with 8,641 votes.
Fianna Fáil's James Lawless topped the poll in Kildare North, with Aidan Farrelly of the Social Democrats, Réada Cronin of Sinn Féin, Fine Gael's Joe Neville, and Fianna Fail's Naoise Ó Cearúil now elected.
In a post on X, Durkan wrote: "Alas, today wasn’t my day but it has been my privilege to represent the people of Kildare in Dáil Éireann for over 43 years".
In a follow-up post, he said: "Congratulations to all the newly elected TD’s for Kildare North and my sincere and heartfelt thanks to all loyal supporters who have so faithfully supported me throughout the years".
