Despite finding themselves under pressure for much of the opening 45 minutes, with goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky impressing between the sticks, Leverkusen conceded before half-time. Joshua Vagnoman teed up Chris Fuehrich for a simple close-range finish to give the hosts a deserved lead.

The visitors responded immediately after the interval, however, as teenage talent Florian Wirtz calmly slotted home just two minutes into the second period. Nigerian forward, Victor Boniface, had done well down the left before laying the ball off for Wirtz to finish first-time.

The equaliser changed the complexion of the contest, with Leverkusen now looking the more dangerous. Granit Xhaka struck the woodwork with a piledriver from distance, while centre-back Jonathan Tah went close to netting a late winner with an acrobatic half-volley.

In the end, honours finished even in an absorbing Bundesliga encounter. The point sees Bayer Leverkusen strengthen their position at the summit, now four points clear of defending champions Bayern, who have a game in hand. Xabi Alonso’s men remain the division’s only unbeaten team after 14 matches.
