Martin O'Neill was the unexpected star of the Carabao Cup second round draw as he spoke to the draw balls instead of his microphone before presenter Mark Chapman questioned him over it.

The former Ireland boss was alongside ex-Leicester City defender Wes Morgan and former Match of the Day 2 presenter Chapman to oversee the English domestic cup draw.

And while the ties were made in the usual way, O'Neill's unconventional announcement style caught the eye in hilarious fashion.

He drew the balls out of the pot as normal and checked it before announcing the number - all while holding the ball close to his mouth and speaking into it.

He repeated the action multiple times while he held his Sky microphone in his left hand and opted not to use it.

O'Neill almost dropped one ball before reading out its number which prompted giggles from Chapman and Morgan and as he continued to speak directly to the balls, Chapman heartily intervened.

He said: 'Martin, I don't know why you're talking to the ball each time!'

O'Neill had a quick response for the presenter - and ironically pulled the microphone closer as he answered.

He said: 'It's much better than talking to you! '

'Let me talk to the ball one last time.'

Premier League-winning defender Morgan struggled at times to maintain his composure as O'Neill continued the ritual.

The second round of the competition - won last year by Manchester United - will be played the week of August 28 and will feature 12 further Premier League sides joining the 36 first round winners.
