Liam Scales has been recognised for a breakthrough season at Celtic by being voted onto the Scottish Premiership team of the season by his peers.

The 25-year-old former UCD and Shamrock Rovers defender looked to have an uncertain future after spending last year on loan at Aberdeen.

But an injury crisis at the beginning of this season opened the door and the Wicklow native has seized the opportunity to become an established member of Brendan Rodgers' side.

In addition to gaining experience at Champions League level, Scales also broke into the Ireland side in October after being on the periphery under Stephen Kenny.

Scales is one of four Celtic players on the side with defensive colleague Cameron Carter Vickers and midfielders Callum McGregor and Matt O'Riley also getting the nod.

Team: Butland (Rangers), Tavernier (Rangers) Carter-Vickers (Celtic), Scales (Celtic), Beck (Dundee); McGregor (Celtic), Lundstram (Rangers), O'Riley (Celtic); Miovski (Aberdeen), Bair (Motherwell), Shankland (Hearts).
