The Hoops were hurting after last season's last 16 defeat to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, but came quickly out the blocks to race into a 2-0 lead within 17 minutes. Daizen Maeda turned home Reo Hatate's cross and then doubled his tally minutes later, beating Josef Bursik at close range after latching onto James Forrest's pass.

Hibs were running the risk of getting blown away only to go into the interval with a lifeline thanks to a superb header from Mykola Kukharevych from Martin Boyle's free-kick delivery. But the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup holders regained the initiative after the break and a costly error in the Hibs back line allowed Nicholas Kuhh to force home a third goal to round off the scoring.

Celtic will face Falkirk at home in the last eight while David Gray's Hibs need to bounce back from three games without a win against Dundee at Easter Road in the league next weekend.

McGregor full of praise for Maeda

The Japanese star took centre stage by scoring two goals through the middle in Kyogo's absence, earning a rave review from his captan.

He was excellent. Obviously he has that pace at the top end of the pitch and makes brilliant runs. He is a dream for a midfield player and gets his goals. Big shoes to fill, but he done excellent.

FULL TIME

Nicolas Kuhn celebrates after scoring to make it 3-1 (Image: SNS Group)

It's all over at Celtic Park, as the hosts cruise into the quarter finals.

Hibs had given themselves a lifeline after falling behind to two early goals, only to concede another poor goal in the second half's midway point to put the tie beyond their reach.

16:50Anthony Evans

Four minutes of additional play

The tie is drawing to a close as Celtic maintain their excellent start to the campaign.

Hibs have made their final sub with Luke Amos replacing captain Joe Newell.

16:47Anthony Evans

Palma shoots wide

The Peruvian goes very close to a fourth for the Hoops.

He takes a nice tough to set up a right-footed strike from the edge of the box that narrowly goes wide of Bursik's right-hand post.

16:45Anthony Evans

Hibs woes set to continue

The Leith side are set to make it three games without a win in all competitions, with rookie boss Gray's tenure in the capital certainly a work in progress.

Hibs take on Dundee at home and Kilmarnock away in the Premiership before next month's international break.

16:41Anthony Evans

Hatate and Kuhn make way

The champions go to their bench again with Luis Palma and Paulo Bernardo coming on for Hatate and goalscorer Kuhn.

A good day's work for both players at Celtic Park.

16:39Anthony Evans

10 minutes remain

Celtic are comfortable and are closing in on a place in the last eight.

It would take something extraordinary for Hibs to produce a grandstand finish.

16:36Anthony Evans

Hibs change

Teenager Rudi-Allan Molotnikov is on for the last 15 minutes in place of Boyle.

Another opportunity for the talented 18-year-old to show what he can do.

16:34Anthony Evans

Bursik denies Idah

The stopper is quick off his line to thwart Idah who had raced onto O'Riley's through ball.

The £9.5milion signing is playing on the last man and is constantly looking to make those dangerous runs in behind.

16:32Anthony Evans

More subs

Celtic have called for more reinforcements as we edge towards the final quarter.

There will be no hat-trick for Maeda who has been replaced by Yang.

16:31Anthony Evans

Big block from Miller

Maeda is nearly put through by O'Riley for a hat trick.

But to his credit, wing-back Miller follows him all the way and is able to make a good challenge.

16:29Anthony Evans

Idah can't sort his feet out

The striker makes a run to the near post to try and meet Maeda's cross.

However the Irishman is unable to make telling contact, with the ball deflecting off him for a goal kick.

16:26Anthony Evans

Normal service has resumed

Having restored their two-goal cushion, the hosts are once again in cruise control.

Rodgers' men continue to look menacing whenever they go forward and will be confident of adding to the scoresheet.

For Hibs, navigating the remaining 23 minutes will be difficult.

16:25Anthony Evans

Burisk saves from O'Riley

The Celtic star finds himself in space outside the box and tries his luck with a left-footed effort.

It's comfortable for Bursik, who palms the ball away to his left.

16:23Anthony Evans

Hibs changes

The away team have now gone to the bench again, with goalscorer Kukharevych making way.

He is replaced by Kieron Bowie while Chris Cadden is on for Ekpiteta.

16:19Anthony Evans

Idah given second debut

Parkhead is on it's feet as Idah takes the place of Forrest for his second debut in green-and-white.

Can the striker mark the occasion with a goal?

16:17KEY EVENT

GOAL!

Celtic's Nicolas Kuhn celebrates making it 3-1

Celtic have a third and it's an absolute calamity of a goal for Hibs.

Bursik is given a poor backpass but doesn't react quick enough and Kuhn is able to close him down and deflect his attempted pass into the net.

Oh dear.

16:15Anthony Evans

Bit of joy for Hibs down the right

One area that the visitors have created a couple of openings is down the right hand side.

Boyle has drifted into that area after spending the first half through the middle while wing-back Miller is also starting to make strides into forward areas.

16:11Anthony Evans

Kuhn can't hit the target

Celtic get back into their groove and some nice play sees Kuhn get a chance to direct a shot towards goal with his favoured left foot.

However, the German is unable to hit the target with his side-footed effort going high and wide of Schmeichel's goal.

16:10Anthony Evans

Cadden gets a shot off

Lewis Miller is picked out over the top and does well to get a cross in from the byline.

The ball finds its way to sub Cadden, but his half-volley is straight down Kasper Schmeichel's throat.

16:08Anthony Evans

Johnston down in a heap

Canada star Johnston is receiving treatment after being a collision inside the Celtic box from a Hibs long throw.

The full back is clutching his thigh but looks like he wants to continue.

16:04KEY EVENT

RESTART

The action resumes at Parkhead.

The visitors have made an alteration with debutant Nicky Cadden replacing the yellow-carded Moriah Welsh, which could possibly also see a change in formation for Gray's men.

If it's even as half as entertaining as the first 45 minutes were, we could be in for another cracker.

15:58Anthony Evans

Bartley livid with Hibs defending

Hibees hero Marvin Bartley is furious with his old club's defending that saw Maeda open the scoring.

The line is all over the place. Jordan Obita is deeper than everyone else so all the other defenders have to fall in line with him.

They don't do that and Maeda is left in the centre by himself. I know Marvin (Ekpiteta) slides across and gets a touch but he should be goal side to put pressure on him. That should be blocked and cannot happen. One centre forward agains three centre halves.

15:48KEY EVENT

HALF TIME

The first 45 minutes at Parkhead have drawn to a close.

Celtic looked like they could run away with it after racing into a 2-0 lead inside 17 minutes, but Kukharevych's sumblime header has clawed Hibs right back into the tie.

It's anyone's guess what the second half wil entail.

15:46Anthony Evans

Kukharevych causing problems

The Ukranian forward has returned to Easter Road for a second loan spell this summer, and is showing just what the Hibees have been missing in the past couple of seasons.

The 23-year-old's aerial presence is giving the Celtic defence something to think about, as demonstrated by his fabulous header to keep his team's cup hopes alive.

15:43Anthony Evans

Into the last five minutes of the half

That Kukharevych header has given Hibs a much needed-boost.

The hosts are still dominating proceedings but Leith boss Gray will be more than happy to go into the break 2-1 down after the terrible start his side made in the first 20 minutes.

15:41Anthony Evans

Penalty shout for Celtic

All eyes are on refere Kevin Clancy after James Forrest goes down under a challenge from Marvin Ekpiteta inside the area.

VAR have had a look, but only a corner is awarded.
