Who are Irish rugby brothers Cian and Sam Prendergast?

The Prendergast clan is a talented bunch as both sons, Cian and Sam, have earned positions for themselves on the Irish rugby squad.

Cian, the elder of the two lads, is 24 years old and plays as a flanker while his younger brother Sam, 21, plays as a fly-half.

Here's everything we know about the sporty brothers who grew up in Co Kildare as the Ireland squad prepares to face off against Fiji at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday:

Born on February 23, 2000, Cian began playing rugby with Newbridge RFC at mini's level. He captained both his school's Senior Cup team and the Leinster schools team in 2018. Cian's initial hope was to play for Leinster; however, he was told in April 2020 that there was no place for him in the academy.

He was later contacted by Eric Elwood and joined the Connacht academy that summer. That October he made his senior debut. In March 2021, it was announced he had signed a professional contract with the club. Ahead of the 2024/25 season he was named club captain.

Cian was included as a development player in the Irish squad for the 2022 Six Nations Championship. He got his first full cap in a test victory against Fiji that November.

The following January he was named in Ireland's squad for the Six Nations; He was somewhat controversially left out of the 2024 Men's Six Nations squad.

It's unknown if Cian, who boasts nearly 7,000 followers on Instagram, is single or in a relationship at present. However, as of January this year, he had been regularly sharing snaps with one Róisín McConnon on social media for eight years.

Róisín's account is followed by rugby WAGs including Kayla Aki and Elaine Porter.

Born on February 12, 2003, Sam initially played as a scrum-half for Newbridge College before he had a growth spurt.

He played club rugby at Newbridge RFC and Lansdowne FC before he joined the Leinster academy in 2022.

He was selected for the Leinster first team in the United Rugby Championship against the Lions in April 2023. Sam was awarded player of the match for his debut performance.

Sam began his international career for the Ireland under-20s in 2022. He was later identified by BBC Sport as one of the stars of the 2023 under-20 Six Nations tournament.

He was selected for the 2024 Six Nations squad as a training panelist. He didn't play in any of the test matches during the championship but was included in the pre-tournament training camps.

He was called up to the senior Ireland squad for the 2024 Autumn internationals, making his senior debut as a second half replacement for Ireland's match against Argentina in November.

Sam boasts a significantly higher Instagram following than his older brother, with 33,000 people intrigued to see what he's doing.

The 21-year-old is in a relationship with his girlfriend Anna Walsh. They went Instagram official with their romance in March 2022.
