The Irish pair both finished third in their respective heats as Sonia O'Sullivan's daughter Sophie narrowly missed out on qualification for the semi-finals.

But 21-year-old O'Sullivan smashed her personal best with a time of 4:02:15, which was some five seconds faster than her previous PB, in what was the fastest run heat of the day.

In fact, O'Sullivan's time was faster than both Healy and Mageean, but ultimately wasn't enough to advance as she finished in eighth place, with only the first six home in each of the four heats qualifying for the semis.

O'Sullivan's heat was won by Kenya's Nelly Chepchirchir, with a time of 4.00.87, after the Irish runner closed the gap on the first six, who had broken away, in the final lap before just running out of steam in the closing stages.

Dubliner Healy was the first of the Irish trio in action in Budapest and clocked a time of 4:03.00 to finish third behind world record holder 1500m, mile, and 5000m record holder Faith Kipyegon of Kenya, with Ethiopian Diribe Welteji coming second.

Mageean looked comfortable throughout her race, recording a time of 4:03:52 and leaving the impression that there is still plenty more to come from the Co Down runner as she finished behind Ethiopia's Hirut Meshesha (4.03.47) and Jessica Hull of Australia (4.03.50).

The semi-finals take place on Sunday and are scheduled to start at 4.05pm Irish time.
