Cillian Murphy has received a nomination for Best Actor for his role in Oppenheimer.

This is Murphy’s first Oscar nomination and is up against Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jeffery Wright.

The Cork actor has been universally praised by critics for his compelling portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Jewish scientist who developed the atomic bomb during World War II.

Irish producers Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney of Dublin-based Element Pictures received 11 nominations for Poor Things, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress.

Dubliner Robbie Ryan received a nomination for Best Cinematography on Poor Things.

This is the highest number of Academy Award Nominations ever received by an Irish-produced film.

Producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe said: “We are thrilled with the news today, and with the ongoing success of Poor Things.

"This is a phenomenal achievement for Yorgos, Emma and our incredible cast and crew of the film, including of course Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan.

"It’s also a huge tribute to all of the Element Pictures team in Dublin, Belfast and London who have been across every detail of this production from its inception to its worldwide release. We are also very grateful to amazing team at Film 4 and to our brilliant distributors Searchlight.”

Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal didn’t receive any nominations in the best actor or best supporting actor categories for their roles in All Of Us Strangers.

Barry Keoghan also missed out on a nomination for best actor for his role in Saltburn.

Cillian Murphy won a Golden Globe for best actor earlier in January for his role in Oppenheimer.

Murphy has risen to prominence for his role in the biopic, which scored him nominations for best actor in the Baftas, Critics Choice Awards and Sag Awards.

Accepting the Golden Globe earlier this month he thanked director Christopher Nolan and the cast and crew of Oppenheimer.

“To all my fellow nominees, if you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends, your stunning work, I salute you," Murphy said.

Murphy previously won a Globe in 2006 for the film Breakfast on Pluto.
