From Coldplay in Dublin to Christy Moore in Sligo - experiencing ...
Concerts would not usually be my “thing”, writes Tom Byrne of The Western People.
Although, two weeks ago, I attended three gigs in six days - as the saying goes - “You wait for ages for a bus and then three come along together!”
First up was a trip to Castlebar to take in the Wolf Tones, before I travelled to Dublin to watch Coldplay and concluded my concert haul by attending a Christy Moore show in Sligo.
They are certainly three contrasting artists and bands but each had their own unique way of entertaining the crowd.
The Wolf Tones was everything one would expect it to be, a 60th-anniversary tour, and they are still going as strong as ever!
Christy Moore’s gig had a similar Irish feel to it with a more mature and settled audience.
Christy has a distinctive and effective way of captivating those in attendance with his storytelling. I was lucky enough to have a seat in the front row which was a thoroughly enjoyable experience seeing a legendary songwriter at work with songs such as ‘Beeswing’ and ‘Ordinary Man’.
For me, though, the Coldplay concert left me awestruck as I left Croke Park. Chris Martin and Co. put on a show for the ages. From the lights display to the fireworks, it was a moment in time to take in.
Through the years I have opted not to take out my phone during an event. I am all for “living in the moment” - witnessing such a spectacular show, and hearing songs like ‘Viva La Vida’ and ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ live, will linger long in my memory.
The ticket cost, 50 quid or so to the Wolf Tones and Christy Moore gigs, was well worth the entrance fee. The Coldplay seated ticket, priced just over €100, was even better value for a solid two hours of enthralling entertainment.
While it was Taylor Swift this year, it will be Oasis in 2025 as the scramble for tickets has already started. It demonstrates that the appetite for concerts is still well and truly alive.
We are fortunate to have a venue such as the TF Royal Theatre in the county of Mayo - a great location with numerous shows for the public to indulge in.
After my recent concert experience, my advice is to “bite the bullet” if there is a gig you wish to attend. I guarantee it will be a satisfying evening of enjoyment.
