Almost £30,000 has been raised for a Co Down man who is currently “fighting for his life” in a coma in Australia.

The family of Gilford man Conor Molloy have travelled from Northern Ireland to Australia to be at his bedside.

A fundraiser was set up on Wednesday to help his family with the expenses of the journey and in less than 24 hours £28,365 has been raised by people in his home of Gilford and beyond across Northern Ireland.

DUP MP Carla Lockhart was among those offering her support to the man’s family.

The GoFundMe fundraiser was originally started and shared by Gilford Amateur Boxing Club.

In a statement on social media the local boxing club said: “Unfortunately Gilford lad Conor Molloy is fighting for his life out in Australia… family have had to fly out to be at his bedside.

Other sports clubs in the area have also been quick to post their own messages of support for Mr Molloy.

Gilford Crusaders Football Club posted: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone involved with Gilford Crusaders are with the family of our former player Conor Molloy who is currently fighting for his life in Australia.

“Please keep Conor’s family in your thoughts at this difficult time.

“Your prayers are asked to help for Conor Molloy who is currently in a coma in Australia, his family have been in touch to ask that we remember Conor in our prayers that he makes a full recovery. Please remember Conor and his family at this most difficult time," said Tullylish GAC.
