There have been multiple reports of flooding and power outages across the county as a Met Éireann status red rain warning for County Cork remains will remain in place until 10am, while Storm Bert, the second named storm of the season, passes over the country.

On Friday, Met Éireann issued two separate red warnings, its highest-level alert, for Cork and Galway, warning of possible “severe flooding, damage to homes and businesses and dangerous or treacherous travelling conditions”.

Earlier this morning, a Ryanair flight from Birmingham to Cork was diverted to Shannon Airport, after what was described as “an unstable approach”.

However, Cork Airport reports that it is operating as normal, with passengers advised to contact their airline directly for updates regarding specific flights.

The Cross River Ferry between Cobh and Passage West has been suspended due to high winds, with service expected to resume once it is safe to operate.

West Cork was expected to bear the brunt of the storm, with the heaviest overnight rainfall expected there.

Cork County Council’s severe weather assessment team convened on Friday afternoon and advised that the council would have staff “monitoring the situation in vulnerable areas such as Bantry and Midleton throughout the night”.

In Dunmanway, the Ardcahan bridge is closed due to rising water levels.

Flood barriers have been installed in Fermoy and Mallow as a precaution, while in the Mallow area, a number of roads are closed due to flooding, including local roads off the N72 at Spa Glen, Ballylough Cross and Parkadallane, the R620, Dromore at Clyda Bridge.

Longfields Bridge and Killavullen Road have also been closed due to concerns about rising river levels.

In Little Island, there are reports of flooding between Circle K and Euro Business Park, while the R600, between Timoleague and Clonakilty, has also experienced flooding.

In Ballineen, the Idle Bridge is reported to be impassable due to flooding.

A number of power outages have been reported across the county, with hundreds of homes in Cork without electricity this morning.

According to the ESB Powercheck website, 1,920 customers are without power, while 212 customers in Mallow have no power, while in Kildorrery, 62 people are without power.

Cork City Council’s severe weather assessment team advised on Friday afternoon that although the city was expected to experience substantial rain, it was not expected to experience levels of rainfall equating to a red warning situation.

The council said it anticipated that the impact experienced in the city would be consistent with that of an orange level warning.

“No tidal flooding is expected but some localised spot flooding and appearance of debris because of rainfall are likely,” a council statement said.

“Motorists are asked to slow down, drive with extra care and to ensure that they drive in a manner that protects vulnerable road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.”

Bus Éireann has cancelled a number of Cork services, with updates available from https://buseireann.ie/.
