Cork’s first coding club invites new members on International Computer Security Day

CoderDojo Zero is inviting anyone from 7 to 17 with an interest in coding to join them on International Computer Security Day – Saturday, November 30th. From its home at Republic of Work on Cork’s South Mall, Ireland’s original coding club will give new members the chance to win one of three reconditioned laptops, as well as offering them useful hacks to keep devices safe and a workshop on internet safety.

The goal of the event is to arm children and young people with the knowledge and tools they need to securely navigate the web and get grips with the technology that is increasingly part of their lives. Bill Liao, who co-founded the CoderDojo movement and regularly attends the CoderDojo Zero club said:

“It’s never been more important for people to keep their devices and data secure. At CoderDojo, kids gain knowledge that gives them power – by developing a fundamental understanding of technology, they are less vulnerable to the internet’s traps and pitfalls, and better equipped to deal with the threats they will inevitably encounter because the number one failure in security in the world is humans.”

CoderDojo helps steer young coders away from the dark side so they can be part of the solution when it comes to internet and software security.  They believe not only is it the more ethical route, it also offers the potential for a high reward career path in Cybersecurity.

The CoderDojo event for International Computer Safety Day takes place on Saturday, 30th November between 1.30 and 4pm. Children and young people between the ages of 7 and 17, along with their parents, are welcome to attend. The event is free but please register your interest at https://codeclub.org/en/clubs/ie/cork/coderdojo-zero where more details are also available.
