Steve tried to save his marriage despite Tracy's affair but she was having none of it

The florist has been romping with the footballer-turned-decorator for a number of weeks before being caught out by Steve's best friend Tim Metcalfe.

Tim ended up breaking the news to his pal after Tracy chickened out, before Steve headed home to confront his wife.

As the couple talked, Steve said he could forgive his wife, but got a further shock when Tracy turned around and said that she didn't want to be forgiven, as she was done pretending she was happy in their marriage.

He demanded to know if she was in love with Tommy, but she told him: “No, I’m not. But I do know one thing Steve, I don’t think I love you either anymore.

“I mean I do love you, but in the way I love this top. I’m not in love with you anymore.”

She added: “I’m tired and I’m bored and I’ve had enough. Enough of waking up in the morning and it’s all downhill from there.

“Enough of this house and its geriatric furniture. And enough of the street with everyone having an opinion. And enough of you Steve.

“I’m sorry, I don’t hate you, I’m not even sick of you. You’re a decent bloke and you still make me laugh.

“But you’re a cardigan Steve and I need a wardrobe change. I’m sorry Steve but it’s time to call it a day.”

Steve begged her to reconsider, insisting they could make their marriage work, but Tracy was having none of it.

The couple have had an on-off relationship with over 20 years, with Tracy repeatedly pursuing Steve.

However Coronation Street fans have made their thoughts on the couple, and the scene in question, very clear on a soap forum.

One wrote: "I never understood why they were paired back up, especially after everything they both went through (and put each other through) in the 2000s anyway.

"Felt a bit like the producers decided they just belonged together, and to hell with their history or any sense of realism. I hope they stay split now.

Liked them as a couple for ages, but no way back now.

"Didn't harm Kevin and Sally - I'm all for long term couples, and I think soaps need a few more of them, but sometimes couples need to split and go their own way.

"(Doesn't help that both Steve and Tracy feel like they've been dumbed down a lot in recent years anyway - Steve especially.)"

Another added: "Watched this on YouTube, out of curiosity, what a load of c**p for two long standing actors. The reveal was so bad why bother in the first place."

A third commented: "Another case of someone not ever being happy with what they've got. Tracy spent YEARS chasing Steve and now she's just not bothered.

"Pathetic they had Steve, the one that was cheated on, be the one to try and beg to save the marriage. He should have been the one finishing it.

Meanwhile a fourth wrote scathingly: "The so called 'acting' was abysmal. My toes are still curled."

A fellow viewer replied: "I would like him with Leanne, however the writers seem hell bent on keeping Nick and Leanne together for some godforsaken reason.

"It was an absolutely lifeless scene. No emotion whatsoever. Comparable to ending a tenancy agreement. I dont think Kate Ford and Simon Gregson are bad actors by soap standards, I blame the writing."

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
