Doireann Garrihy has revealed her hilarious response to fiancé Mark Mehigan when he proposed.
The couple started dating in October 2022, and have since moved in together in Castleknock.
After one year together, the happy couple announced their engagement in December.
Having confirmed an official wedding date for later this year, the bride-to-be shared the story of the proposal on her podcast Doireann with Friends on Monday with former Today FM radio presenter Pamela Joyce who was this week’s guest.
Doireann set the scene by saying: “He just got down on one knee and he put his hand inside his jacket pocket, and I was just like, ‘freeze’.
Pamela joined in, laughing, “nobody move”.
Doireann continued: “I was in such shock that I go ‘stand up’, and he was like ‘what?’
“So he got up and started proposing to me, and then it actually dawned on me that he was proposing so I go, ‘get back down’.
“And he was like ‘okay’ , so he got back down and his knee was sopping wet from the hailstones.”
Doireann had earlier recalled on Dermot Whelan’s Mind Full podcast how she fell for her comedian boyfriend.
“I knew very, very early on. So, we met at the start of October 2022, and in mid-November, my sisters and I went for a sister night, kind of a Christmas night.
“And after a few wines, I was like, ‘if he doesn’t tell me he loves me by Christmas, I’m gonna tell him’.”
Even though her sisters had very different reactions, with Aoibhin telling her to go for it, and Ailbhe saying, ‘don’t f**king do it, the 31-year-old said she didn’t mind being the one to say it first.
Doireann recalled saying: “I don’t care, I’ve loved him from the moment I met him.
Earlier this month it was revealed how the popular RTÉ radio and TV presenter is to leave RTÉ 2FM.
The social media star has decided to leave RTÉ 2FM after five years and hopes to focus her time on her podcasts and travel.
Doireann with Carl Mullan and Donncha O’Callaghan
Doireann will present her final 2FM Breakfast with Doireann, Donncha and Carl on RTÉ 2FM on Friday, May 31, according to a statement issued by RTÉ.
"After 5 years of 2FM Breakfast it’s time for ventures new,” she said.
"Donncha and Carl, I have found brothers for life in you both.
"What an absolute blast of craic, ridiculous immaturity and lifelong bond building. Anyone would be blessed to work with one gentleman every day, I was beyond blessed to work with two.
"To the loyal 2FM listeners, through thick and thin you’ve been there. Your support has meant everything. There wasn’t a day I didn’t hop out of the bed at 5am. Thank you for welcoming me with open ears back in 2019 and every day since.
"Producer Grace, you’re a boss, a queen, a friend for life. Willem, it’s been an absolute pleasure. Thank you to Dan Healy for meeting me in 2019 and taking a chance on me. I’m so glad you did.”
She continued: "Now, it’s time for my podcasts Doireann and Friends and The Laughs Of Your Life, to travel, to give more to the people who have been on this journey with me since the viral impressions video of 2016 and to pursue the projects I’ve been dreaming about. As we would say to our lovely callers on air, good luck and thanks."
Head of RTÉ 2FM, Dan Healy said Doireann was an exceptional broadcaster and had been a very important part of team at 2FM.
"Everyone in the station is sorry to hear that she has decided to leave. I am very proud of the breakfast show that Doireann presented with Donncha and Carl which has been loved by the audience and very successful in the JNLRs.
"Personally, I'm sorry to see her leave, but I respect Doireann's decision. I wish her the very best for the future in everything she does. Doireann leaves 2FM in good shape and we look forward to building on the success of the breakfast show over the summer months and beyond."
Carl Mullan and Donncha O’Callaghan later paid tribute to their RTÉ 2FM co-host after her announcement that she was leaving the station.
Sharing a snap of the trio on Instagram, Carl, who won season 6 of Dancing With the Stars, wrote: “Doireann, you’re stuck with Donners and I until the end of the month so there’ll be plenty more time for some slagging so be warned.
“But more than anything, more time to properly put into words what you mean to us. For now, all I’ll say is that getting to wake up every morning to work (and laugh endlessly) with the most incredible teammate and friend has been a genuine privilege. We love ya Swan.”
Former rugby star Donncha posted a series of photos from the past few years and said that Doireann is “on a different level” as a colleague.
He penned: “I’ve been blessed with some incredible teammates but @doireanngarrihy is a different level.
“Kind, serious craic & incredibly talented at everything she does, all on top of a work ethic like no other. You never say goodbye to the good ones more of a ‘see you, along the way sister’. Thanks Swan.”
