'Random knife attack' at Dublin Airport – victim was smoking outside ...
The victim of a random attack at Dublin Airport was smoking a cigarette outside the departures hall when he was stabbed multiple times yesterday.
Sources say a penknife was used in the attack and that the man suffered seven stab wounds.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident outside Terminal 1 at approximately 11.30am yesterday.
Airport police responded to the serious assault within 90 seconds of being alerted to the matter before gardaí arrived on scene.
The victim, who is in his 50s, was stabbed a number of times in the neck and abdomen.
He was rushed to Beaumont Hospital where he was treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
A suspect was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and was last night detained at a north Dublin garda station.
The man, also aged in his 50s, is not known to the victim and there is understood to be no clear connection between the men.
A source told the Irish Independent: “Investigations into this matter are ongoing but at this moment in time this is being treated as a random attack.”
The scene outside the departures hall of Terminal 1 was preserved to facilitate a technical examination.
A spokesperson for DAA, which manages and operates Dublin Airport, said: “Airport police at Dublin Airport responded to an incident outside Terminal 1 this morning. One person has been arrested by the gardaí. Flights at Dublin Airport are operating normally.”

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating a public order incident that occurred outside Terminal 1 of Dublin Airport, Co Dublin, at approximately 11.30am today, Sunday, 17th September 2023.
“A man (50s) was taken from the scene to Beaumont Hospital to be treated for injuries believed, at this time, to be non-life-threatening.
“A second male (50s) was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in the north Dublin area. Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.
“Any pedestrians or road users who were in the vicinity of Terminal 1 between 11am and 11.45am this morning, Sunday, 17th September 2023, and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) are asked to make this available to investigating gardaí.
“Anyone with information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Dublin Airport garda station on 01 666 4950, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station,” the spokesperson added.
