News of the coveted win comes after the hotel passed into the hands of Mark and Joseph Scott-Lennon when their mother Eithne retired in November, as the third generation of family members at the helm of the castle.

Commenting on the award, they said: 'We are very proud to receive the Travellers Choice Award as it reflects the dedication of our amazing team at Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel.

'Guest satisfaction is our top priority, and we are fortunate to have such a dedicated team whose efforts ensure that priority is consistently met.'

In February, it was announced that the brothers plan to invest €10m in the hotel in the next five years focusing on sustainability and expansion.

A significant investment is already under way including the recent expansion of the onsite padel courts. The terrace bar and café will also see an upgrade.

Along with the TripAdvisor win, the hotel has already been the recipient of customer service awards from CIE, the Failte Ireland Optimus Programme, and an AA Rosette Award.

Ireland failed to make the top ten cut at this year's awards which instead went to Tokyo in Japan, Seoul in South Korea, Halong Bay in Vietnam, Palawan Island, in the Philippines, Sapa in Vietnam, Bogata in Columbia, Pattaya in Thailand, Alajuela in Costa Rica, Phnom Penh in Cambodia and Kuala Lumper in Malaysia.
