Dundee United vs Rangers – LIVE updates

It would be a bit of a stretch to describe today’s Scottish Premiership match as being season-defining, however, the stakes couldn't have been higher for Rangers.

They simply had to get back to winning ways after falling to defeat against Celtic last time out, with the international break filled with fans venting their anger at the club and their Tannadice victory saw them climb above today's opponents into third place.

Tom Lawrence put the visitors ahead early on with a lovely little dinked finish but Rangers failed to capitalise on their dominance and at times had to hold on to their one-goal advantage.

Dundee United have been a formidable opponent this season and started the day ahead Rangers in the table by one point, unbeaten in eight, and recording three clean sheets on the spin but they failed to find a clear route to goal at all in the first 45 minutes and were unable to be clinical when necessary after the interval to level the score.

Philippe Clement seems to deal in good vibes only when talking about his side and he is utterly certain Rangers are on the up. Chairman John Bennett has exited but Clement is adamant he will turn things around.

After just returning to the top flight in the summer, Dundee United can take plenty of positives from the result as they remain fourth in the table.

Souttar talks up value of clean sheets

John Souttar insists it is vital to keep clean sheets as he delivered his Dundee United verdict.

The Rangers stopper helped his side from conceding at Tannadice with Tom Lawrence the matchwinner.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, he deliverd his verdict on the first and second half displays.

We probably made it difficult for ourselves second half. In the first half I thought we were in the ascendancy and moved it well. Second half we didn't do it as much but it is important in games like away from home that we keep a clean sheet and we know we have the quality who will score goals.

Lawrence speaks post-match

Tom Lawrence was delighted to help Rangers return to winning ways.

He admits he may well should have bagged more than just the goal, that proved the winning strike at Tannadice.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match he hailed the performance and praise his team-mates for digging in when it was needed to claim maximum points on the road.

Big result. It's been a long international break. It was a good performance and we dug in when we needed too and got the three points. I should have killed off the game with the chances I had but I am just happy for the lads that we got the three points.

Not long to go now

The game has hit another lull as the clock ticks down with a dangerous Luca Stephenson leading to a free kick for Rangers after the ref gave a foul for a challenge on Jack Butland.

13:48Jack Herrall

United threaten again

Ross Docherty's attempt from 20-yard out loops wide of the post after Butland palmed away a fizzed cross.

It's getting tense with just over five minutes to go.

Aaaaaand another booking!

This time it's for Philippe Clement for dissent.

13:45Jack Herrall

Lawrence, close, again

It's an excellent ball through from Igamane to Lawrence who is racing into the area.

He gets his shot off but Jack Walton gets down sharply to keep the game at just one goal in it.

13:36Jack Herrall

A few more Rangers subs

Dowell and Diomande are off.

20 to go

United are the team looking more likely to score just now but Lawrence shot a few moments ago was a warning shot they they're not resting on their one-goal lead

Can either side find a way to goal to tip the balance of the game with time running out?

13:32Jack Herrall

The long throw tactic

One of United's most potent weapons at times is the long throw from Ross Graham.

He launches one in that calls the Rangers back line into action and they knock it out for a corner.

The set-piece fails to beat the first man, though.

13:30Jack Herrall

Lawrence goes close again

Similar to his goal, Lawrence drives into the box and gets the luck of the bounce as it falls kindly for him to have a go.

He tries to send this one high into he far top corner from the left corner of the box but it just creeps over the bar.

13:29Jack Herrall

Another United attack

United are attacking and in the Rangers box again but Jort van der Sande can't make it stick before it bounces through for Butland to scoop up.

United surging

The ball is switched out to Kristijan Trapanovski who beats Robin Propper but can't get his shot away from inside the box before Kieran Dowell recovers well to clean up.

The resulting United corner is swung straight back out of the play.

13:23Jack Herrall

United pick up another card

Ross Graham is in the book now.

13:20Jack Herrall

Nothing to report from the corner

The corner is looped in and knocked further back in the box to Kristijan Trapanovski who sees his effort go well wide.

13:20Jack Herrall

So close for United

Kristijan Trapanovski does brilliantly to work his way from the right-hand side of the box to the edge of the area and takes his chance to have a shot at goal.

It takes a deflection, which might actually help it closer to goal, but it squirms just narrowly wide of the post for a United corner.

13:18Jack Herrall

Butland's blushes spared

Butland tries to play it out from the back and his pass it deflected by Craig Sibbald but the keeper's blushes are spared as the United man can't get it under control just outside of the area.

That does give the home fans a chance to roar their side on though, something they've not had much of so far this afternoon.

13:13Jack Herrall

United have a shot blocked

United surge forward and David Babunski works a yard of space on the edge of the box to have a crack at goal.

Unfortunately for the hosts, it's blocked before it can make its way towards Jack Butland in goal.
