A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Cobh chef Ian Baitson.

Dylan Scannell, of O'Rahilly Street, Cobh, was brought before a sitting of Midleton District Court on Monday morning.

The 30-year-old was dressed in a black T-shirt, black shorts and runners, and was represented in court by solicitor Ken Murray.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Detective Sergeant Gerard O'Shaughnessy of Midleton Garda Station said the accused made no reply when charged.

The court heard no bail application could be made at district court level in the case. However, an application was made for free legal aid and was granted by Judge Colm Roberts.

Mr Scannell was remanded in custody to appear before Mallow District Court on Tuesday via video link.

Mr Baitson, a 32-year-old father of two children, was seriously injured in a carpark in Cobh on March 15. He died in hospital on March 19.
