Galway's own Sarah McInerney shared a clever trick to her fans on how to stay warm outdoors after her home county was bombarded with snow this week.

The Bearna woman, who is one of RTÉ's top journalists, is no stranger to dealing out cold hard questions to the politicians she deals with on telly.

Given this week's cold snap which saw temperatures fall to near freezing during the day, Sarah had to wrap up well as she reported live from Kilkenny for Prime Time on Tuesday.

The journalist had to balance the tough task of standing outside in the frosty air for hours but still "look sort of professional".

She took to Instagram to show her fans a video of her outfit and captioned it: "My tips for secretly staying warm."

Sarah said: "So the last time this happened, I got so cold. I was so cold I couldn't even hardly ask questions. I've decided that's never going to happen to me again.

"These are my tips. It might look like I'm just wearing jeans and a jumper and a top but oh no, oh no - there's much more than that going on."

She buttoned down her trench coat to reveal another puffy jacket underneath.

"This is actually really handy. I got it online for about €40 and it rolls up into a little ball and I actually use it all the time," Sarah explained.

"It's really really light but it's feather and it just keeps you warm." She also had extra socks on and feet and hand warmers.

"So now if you happen to watch Prime Time tonight, you'll know what's really going on in the background," Sarah joked.

"I thought there'd be a hot water bottle hidden somewhere," one commenter said.

Met Eireann have issued the following forecast for Thursday.

"Wintry outbreaks of snow, sleet, rain will clear most areas by mid-morning, and southern counties by midday. While sunshine will develop, a few scattered wintry showers will follow into Atlantic counties."

"Icy stretches will linger through the day in places. Highest temperatures of just 1 to 4 degrees in a chilly northerly winds, brisk across Munster.

"Thursday night will be very cold with widespread frost and icy stretches. Scattered wintry showers of rain, sleet and snow will occur with clearest skies across the Midlands and Southeast. Lowest temperatures of -4 to +1 degrees in moderate westerly winds.
