What really happened on the fishing trip in Gavin and Stacey has been ‘exposed.’
For years, fans of the beloved BBC sitcom have wondered what exactly went down on the trip with Uncle Brynn (Rob Brydon) and nephew Jason (Robert Wilfort). As viewers will know, there’s a long-running joke that the pair have a dark secret.
And the only people who know the truth are Bryn and Jason, as well as Dave ‘Coaches’. The fishing trip was mentioned several times in the show’s three series', and was brought up again in the 2019 Christmas special.

The mysterious incident, which happened before the sitcom kicked off, resulted in the fall-out between Bryn and Jason. Later on in the series though, Bryn and Jason reconcile - but it’s not revealed what exactly happened.
The only information the characters have let slip is that what happened between them was “dark in every sense of the word.” However, the incident was “legal in Wales.”
What’s more, it also somehow involved “soup” and happened because they were “cold.” And Dave ‘Coaches’ described it as “defying the laws of gravity.”
Fortunately, it was recently confirmed that Gavin and Stacey is coming back for one last episode. So fans are now hoping that they will finally learn the truth about the fishing trip.
However, over the years, plenty of viewers have come up with their own theories. And one has left fans feeling rather uneasy.
In a Reddit thread, one eagle-eyed Redditor mused: “So, hear me out: I think Bryn and Jason accidentally killed someone on their fishing trip. Christmas Special 2019, Bryn says it was 'dark in every sense of the word' Jason says they 'knew nothing about camping'."
Explaining, the Redditor added: “This makes me think that while setting up the tent, Bryn and Jason somehow accidentally killed someone, maybe with the hammer or tent poles, I'm not too sure on the specifics of how they did it.”
The fan then noted how to answer the question about the “soup” Bryn and Jason decided to make some to stay warm when it was “freezing cold.” As for Dave Coaches in the whole situation, the fan said: “When Dave speaks about it defying the laws of gravity, they could have hidden the body in a tree using the rope they'll have had from the tent.”
The fan then recalled Jason saying whatever happened on the trip “was perfectly legal” in Wales, and then pointed out: “Involuntary manslaughter wasn't introduced as a law in Wales until the late 1990s.
“And so, because of how young Jason was, and how awful Bryn feels for traumatising his nephew makes them feel awkward around each other, and hate each other at the start of the show.”
Other fans agreed with the theory. One viewer even pointed out a ‘clue’ that could indicate Bryn and Jason ‘killed someone". They wrote: “I like the theory, especially as the two families are named after serial killers!”
Loyal fans will know that the families in and Gavin and Stacey are named after famous British serial killers. Stacey's family, the Wests, are named after Fred and Rose West and Peter and Dawn Sutcliffe, the Shipman's friends, are named after Peter Sutcliffe.
