Hollywood star George Clooney has joked how he had ‘to take out and wash his liver’ after a trip to his ancestral home of Abbeyleix.

Chatting to Miriam O’Callaghan on her RTÉ Radio show yesterday, Clooney, pictured, was asked about his Irish roots.

‘Clooney and the Irish connection? Come on! I went and visited a few years ago and I had a wonderful time,’ he said. ‘I met a whole bunch of Clooneys when I was last there.

'That was fun to see. I didn’t know them but the funny thing was when I got there, I started to see all these people who looked like me or people in my family. So I was like “Oh my God, we are really related”.’

In 2019, George and his wife, Amal, 45, a world-renowned human-rights lawyer and their twins, Ella and Alexander, now six, visited the actor’s familial home of Abbeyleix in Laois.

While there, he met up with cousins Séamus and Agnes Clooney and another cousin Fiona Clooney at the five-star Ballyfin House.

The actor also revealed that he plans to return to Ireland next year and trace his ancestors.

‘Of course, I plan to come back. I had to leave because I had to take my liver out and wash it after my week in Ireland. I love it there,’ he said. ‘I went there in February and it was 40C and sunny the whole time I was there. It was unbelievable.’
