In the early hours of Christmas Day, 2016, the world was stunned by the news of George Michael’s untimely death. The music icon, beloved for his powerful voice and eclectic style, was found lifeless at his home in Oxfordshire by his boyfriend Fadi Fawaz. The heartbreaking discovery shattered all plans for a festive Christmas lunch, as Fadi tragically realized that George had passed away in his sleep.

It was not until March 7, 2017, that the senior coroner for Oxfordshire, Darren Salter, provided the public with the cause of George Michael’s mysterious death. The iconic pop star had succumbed to natural causes, specifically dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver. The Mayo Clinic defines dilated cardiomyopathy as a form of heart muscle disease that causes the heart chambers to weaken and enlarge, making it increasingly difficult for the heart to effectively pump blood throughout the body.

This grave and debilitating condition is known to manifest in various symptoms, including general fatigue and breathlessness. While shocking, it became clear that George had unknowingly battled this insidious disease. Alongside dilated cardiomyopathy, he also suffered from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Although natural causes ultimately claimed his life, the discovery of these underlying health issues deepened the tragedy surrounding the loss of a true musical virtuoso.

Adding to the distressing health revelation, George Michael’s autopsy revealed an ongoing struggle with a fatty liver. The National Health Service (NHS) explains that a fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis if left unchecked. The first stage, known as steatosis, involves the accumulation of fat within liver cells, but is largely benign. However, as the condition progresses to steatohepatitis, the liver becomes inflamed, significantly worsening the situation. Finally, in the third stage, persistent inflammation results in the build-up of scar tissue, affecting both the liver and surrounding blood vessels. The terminal stage is characterized by cirrhosis, wherein the liver becomes shrunken, scarred, and nodular.

Various factors can exacerbate the risk of developing a fatty liver, particularly in individuals over the age of 50. Conditions such as metabolic syndrome or diabetes can significantly contribute to the progression of this potentially fatal ailment. Unfortunately, George Michael fell victim to these risk factors, which ultimately led to the deterioration of his liver.

Amidst the somber revelation surrounding George Michael’s health struggles, the world bid a final farewell to the international pop sensation. On March 29, 2017, family, friends, and fans gathered at the Highgate West Cemetery to honor his memory and lay him to rest. The funeral marked the end of an era, as the music industry mourned the loss of one of its most iconic, influential, and beloved figures.

George Michael, a true legend, will forever be remembered for his angelic voice and inspiring artistry. As the world continues to mourn his untimely passing, his legacy lives on through the timeless music that touched the hearts of millions.
