Greece has warned tourists to stay indoors during storms

Greece is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, but this summer the country has been plagued by extreme weather. Back in June, extreme temperatures of up to 42C triggered wildfires and the heatwave continued throughout July.

Now, a new weather warning has been issued – and this time, it’s about stormy conditions. People are being advised to stay indoors during the rain, and to avoid areas at a high risk of flooding or landslides. Here is everything you need to know if you have a trip booked to Greece. 

It’s predicted that much of Greece will be hit by heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms over the next day, which will spread westwards throughout Monday afternoon. Popular tourist spots such as Crete, Kilkis and Thessaloniki are among the affected areas. 

The extreme weather is expected to pick up later this afternoon and will continue into the evening. The Greek Meteorological Service expects conditions to ease in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with conditions looking much better throughout the day tomorrow. 

The advice if you’re in Greece today is to remain vigilant, follow local advice and steer clear of areas at risk of landslides or rock falls (e.g. Samaria Gorge) as well as coastal areas due to the strong winds. If the rain is heavy, you’re advised to stay indoors. 

If you have any ferries, boat trips or water activities booked, it’s likely services will be delayed or cancelled. Flights could also be affected.
