Hate speech Bill

Speaking from the Dáil tonight, Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath who is also the leader of the Rural Independent Group, criticized the government and opposition TDs for pushing through the controversial Hate Crime Bill, which passed by 78 votes to 52 with no abstentions.

McGrath is concerned that the bill was 'hastily passed' as it was one of five bills passed in the Dáil in six hours yesterday evening.

McGrath also worries that the bill will have big implications for society now that it has been passed.

“The government has not listened to the people on this topic. They tried to water down the legislation, but the simple fact remains that it is a step towards a more restrictive society. We already have sufficient laws in place to protect against hate crimes.”

“This bill is a punitive measure that threatens our democracy and freedom of expression. Its provisions create a chilling effect on open dialogue and debate, which are essential components of our democratic society. Despite minor changes, it remains deeply flawed and lacks clear definitions of what constitutes hate and gender.”

The bill was also opposed by Independent TD Danny Healy Rae and Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has also previously said that he will fund legal challenges to Ireland's new hate crime legislation.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee previously dropped the 'hate speech' element of this legislation after backlash from many people.

The new legislation will now increase prison sentences for those convicted of certain crimes motivated by hatred.
