Bill Murray was branded ‘a gentleman’ after the Hollywood icon shocked staff and guests at a hotel in Co Donegal over the weekend.

Known for Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation, Murray is no stranger to Irish shores having visited some of the country’s golf courses for a documentary.

During filming of The Links Life, a golf travel documentary, in 2021, Murray was spotted in Co Wicklow’s Druids Glen Resort, Carton House in Portsalon, Galway Bay Golf Resort and a number of other courses.

While it’s yet to be confirmed if Murray is filming another season of his show, the 74-year-old was seen along with his friends at the Caisleáin Óir Hotel in Annagry, West Donegal on Sunday.

Posing with the hotel’s staff for a picture in the kitchen, Bill could be seen holding his leftover dinner in a little doggy bag, showing that he couldn’t get enough of the food on offer.

Never one to shy away from the spotlight, Murray was kind enough to take pictures and sign autographs for the guests who were left stunned by his appearance.

‘What a gentleman. We had the privilege of having Bill Murray in for dinner and he popped in to thank and meet our entire kitchen crew. Thank you Bill,’ the Caisleáin Óir said on Facebook.

The comments section of Caisleáin Óir’s post saw members of the public having their say on the Oscar nominated actor’s surprise sighting in Co Donegal.

One person said: ‘Obviously he heard about the great food and welcoming staff he will be back on a return visit for sure.’

Another added: ‘Superb! Word of your great food reaching far and wide. Is his private jet at Carrickfin?’

While someone cleverly wrote in a nod to Groundhog Day: ‘He’s doing it all again; tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow.’

Despite being in his seventies, Murray is showing no signs of slowing down in recent years, returning to the role of Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters Frozen Empire earlier in the year.
