Holstein Kiel 1-6 Bayern Munich: Initial reactions and observations

Holstein Kiel vs Bayern
Bayern Munich performed an effortless demolition of Holstein Kiel. Despite a lull in the second half, the team was overall confident, calm, and in control for pretty much the entire ninety minutes. While people will say that it’s the expected result against a team like Kiel, performances like these were extremely rare last season under Thomas Tuchel, where it felt like every game was a struggle regardless of the opponent or final scoreline. The last time Didi Hamann took unnecessary shots at a Bayern Munich player, he got Robert Lewandowski to turn into the best player in the world for a couple of seasons. If he’s done it again with Jamal Musiala, someone at the club should send him a cake. João Palhinha is living up to the hype. His first start in the league demonstrated exceptional positioning and ball-winning capabilities. Harry Kane started the season slow (by his standards), but this hat trick shows he’s still got it in him. Hopefully this kickstarts his goalscoring for the rest of the year. It’s a shame Serge Gnabry didn’t score — someone should tell him he’s allowed to finish chances against teams based outside of London.

Full time: Bayern Munich crush Kiel 6-1.

90’ — Penalty! VAR orders the ref to the screen, and it shows that Kane was brought down in the box.

Harry Kane steps up aaaaand ... it’s a hat trick!

82’ — Goal. Kiel make it 5-1.

65’ — GOOOOOOOOOOAL! Olise makes it 5-0!

45’ — Sub: Musiala has been subbed off for Thomas Müller. Let’s hope it’s not an injury.

Halftime: Bayern Munich lead 4-0.

43’ — GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Kane makes it 4-0!

13’ — GOOOOOOOOOOAL! It’s an own goal, but an own goal that was 99% created by Jamal Musiala.

6’ — GOOOOOOOOOAL! Harry Kane makes it 2-0!

1’ — GOOOOOOAL! Musiala scores from kickoff (practically).

Kickoff: We’re underway!

One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! Looks like João Palhinha gets his first official start at Bayern Munich, while Alphonso Davies and Michael Olise drop to the bench for Guerreiro and Coman. The rest of the XI is no surprise — the usual suspects are all in the lineup.

With the international break now over, Bayern Munich can get on with one of the busiest parts of any season — the September-October gauntlet. With league games ramping up and Champions League games coming into play, this is where a coach needs to prove their credentials.

Vincent Kompany has won all his games thus far. It’s a good start but there’s always the risk that the international break threw off the squad’s rhythm, and a team like Holstein Kiel (who were spared the need to send players for international duty) could pull off an upset at their home stadium.

Kompany will need to prevent that at all costs, while also keeping his best players — Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and the like — fresh for the upcoming UCL opener vs Dinamo Zagreb. This is the delicate balancing act any coach much master if they want to be successful in Munich.

It’s Bayern time.
