Holyhead Port is set to remain closed until at least next Thursday due to damage following Storm Darragh.
The port has been shut since December 7 with all ferry services between Dublin Port and Holyhead in Wales suspended. The closure has caused havoc for shipping services using the route, with fears growing that Christmas deliveries may be delayed.
It has now been confirmed that the port will not reopen until Thursday December 19th at the earliest. A spokesperson for Holyhead Port told Dublin Live: “Last Saturday morning (7th Dec) during Storm Darragh, an incident occurred at Holyhead Port which caused damage to port infrastructure.
"As a result, the ferry berths have remained closed to all marine traffic. No injuries were reported, and all relevant authorities were informed of the incident.
"Safety is of paramount importance to Holyhead Port and a thorough investigation into the extent of the damage and repairs required is ongoing. At this point, it is estimated that the berths will reopen for ferry traffic on Thursday 19th December at the earliest.”
On Thursday evening, An Post issued an update to customers and reassured them that if you ordered your delivery before Storm Darragh then you should receive it in the coming days.
An Post said: "Many UK retailers have worked to secure alternative routes into to Ireland while Holyhead remains closed resulting in a much decreased backlog of parcel trucks at Holyhead.
"An Post expects to receive approximately 350,000 UK parcels over the next 24 hours and we have the facilities technology and staff to process and deliver them.
"If you ordered pre Storm Darragh and haven’t received your parcel yet, we expect it should arrive in the coming days but check directly with your retailer. If you are planning to order from UK retailers, check with them regarding their delivery dates for Ireland.
"An Post advises customers to shop local with Irish retailers, and buy Irish. All outgoing international parcel services are operating normally. There will be nationwide parcel deliveries and all post offices will remain open this Saturday 14th December.
"An Post will be delivering up to Christmas Eve all parcels received by December 21st."
