It's been 34 years since the release of the iconic film Home Alone, but fans continue to uncover what they believe to be 'plot holes'. As the holiday season approaches, the movie reappears on screens, sparking renewed debate and theories.
This year, enthusiasts have revisited the original film, raising questions about a significant aspect that was seemingly glossed over in the sequels.
In the first installment, Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left behind when his family departs for Paris, leading to a series of chaotic events involving two bumbling burglars.

However, fans have noticed that in the second film, Kevin fails to mention this pivotal event, merely hinting at being left home alone. On Reddit, one fan pointed out: "All throughout the second film, his family only ever describes him as being left alone during Christmas-never once do they refer to the fact that he fought off two thieves while he was home alone. The only witness to Kevin fighting the thieves was the old man with the snow shovel. One would think that he would have discussed the ordeal with Kevin's parents."
The fan went on to question why Kevin and his neighbour might have kept this information from his family, speculating: "A plot hole? Or, alternatively, is there a possibility that Kevin hallucinated the entire events of the first and second films? " Fans have been offering their theories, with one suggesting: " Kevin does tell his family, but no one believes him would be my explanation for that one."
Another fan thought the film had already hinted at Kevin's secrecy, writing: "I felt this was addressed when they asked Kevin what he was up to and he said not much just hung around. It showed he was going to keep it a secret."
One viewer expressed their disbelief at Kevin's cleaning skills, stating: "It bothers me that Kevin managed to clean and repair the entire house leaving behind no evidence, except somehow the gold tooth is found by his dad in the living room," Home Alone has become a global sensation, still enjoyed during the holiday season nearly four decades on.
The franchise now boasts six films, released between 1990-2021. Despite being synonymous with the series, Macaulay Culkin departed the franchise after 1992's Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
