Welterweight contender Neil Magny vowed to teach the Ian Machado Garry a lesson, although the way he went about it had the undefeated rising star livid at the UFC 292 press conference.

Speaking on Friday morning [AEST] ahead of the pair’s fight at the TD Garden, Garry called out Magny over what he described as a “f***ing ridiculous” claim.

On Thursday at the official UFC 292 media day, Magny warned he was going to prove Garry made a “huge mistake” and that he would “put a beating” on the 25-year-old.

“It’s not my first rodeo fighting a guy who’s undefeated, a younger opponent, whatever else,” Magny said.

“You can name it, I’ve been there, done that kind of thing. So he should have all the confidence in the world. He should feel he’s going to go in there and have a great night.

“It’s up to me to go out there and literally show him, no, you made a huge mistake. You got a lot of growing to do and put a beating on him.”

It was what Magny said next, however, that caught the attention of Garry.

“There’s like different levels to a**e whoopings that come about,” said Magny.

‘There’s the whooping that you give somebody in high school or in grade school… there’s the whooping you give your son now like to kind of teach him life a little bit. Being a father, I’ve become quite accustomed to that kind of whooping now, and that’s what we’re looking forward to giving on Saturday.”

Those comments did not go down well with Garry, who was visibly stunned as he reacted to them in a video posted to the Irish fighter’s social media accounts.

Clearly still upset by Magny’s comments, Garry then effectively tried to gag his rival as he told reporters the 36-year-old would not be able to answer any of their questions.

“No, no, no, no, no. Neil is not answering a question,” Garry said when one reporter attempted to ask Magny a question.

“He’s going to sit there and he’s going to be f***ing quiet. Nobody, there is no f***ing right to ever put your hand on a kid, ever. Discipline. Anything. You’re a father, you never f***ing lay your hands on a child ever.”

Earlier in the press conference, Garry described Magny’s comments as “f***ing ridiculous” and said the veteran fighter “should be ashamed”.

“I think Neil was given a f***ing mic yesterday and he should sit up here on this stage and say nothing,” Garry said.

“He put his f***ing foot in the dirt. If he speaks today he’s going to be digging a hole. Nobody, nobody is to ask Neil Magny a question today. He is to sit there and reflect on the s*** that he said because what he said was f***ing ridiculous.

“We are tackling a very, very big issue... he should sit there and f***ing sit down, shut up and reflect on what he said.

“... Every time you speak you need to hear the words that came out of your mouth at that press conference yesterday. You should be f***ing ashamed saying you laid hands on a f***ing child.”

Magny though denied he had ever abused his son, later warning Garry against ever mentioning his child again.

“You know exactly what that statement meant... you know for a fact I’ve never put a hand on my child,” Magny said.

“Do not mention my child,” Magny later added.

“Do not mention my child. I will slap you on this stage right now. Do not mention my child. That’s your only warning. Shut your mouth and do not mention my child. Next question please.”

Magny, who had been coaching Austin Hubbard ahead of his fight against Kurt Kolobaugh, was a late addition to the card after Geoff Neal had to pull out due to medical issues.

“Even before I got the call I was preparing for this fight anyway,” Magny said at media day.

“I was initially supposed to be here just coaching this weekend for Austin Hubbard, so when the offer came through to actually fight this week, I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ This is icing on the cake for me.”
