Minister Catherine Martin to intervene following news of the closure of Limerick’s International Rugby Experience.

Cllr Sheehan said:

“Government must step in and find another use for the International Rugby Experience building.

“I simply do not accept that there is no viable path forward for this landmark building in the city and I am deeply concerned that it could be left to lie vacant and fall into dereliction.

“There’s no doubt that capital investment will be needed to look for an alternative use for the centre. This will require powers and funding beyond the scope of Limerick City and County Council. Minister Martin needs to step in now for the people of Limerick.

“I am calling on the Council to publish in full the recent due diligence report and to liaise with the Department and Fáilte Ireland to find a viable alternative tourism proposal.

“All correspondences relating to the building and the project must be put into the public domain. This includes the briefing made to Councillors this week. The people of Limerick deserve to know what is going on here.

“Limerick is a great city and the International Rugby Experience could have brought an uplift in tourists visiting. Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water and find a solution here.

“It’s unconscionable that it could be left idle indefinitely.”
