IPL Auction 2025 Live: Mumbai Indians approach
Mumbai Indians bought only four plays on the opening day of the auction and waited until the sixth set to outbid rest of the pack. They signed only one overseas player, their only so far in the squad, on Sunday. They have nine players in their squad as things stand so they need to bring in at least nine.
MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene said MI were always going to be patient.
"When we saw the list of players, that it’s two halves to this auction. So we knew that if we’re doing this route, we have to be patient. There’s another 400 or more players on the list. So we could pick and choose and there’s a lot of talent that we’re going to pick wisely.
"At the end of the day, the auction is not just for the players that are in the auction and the purses that we have, it’s to the players that we retain, the value that we put into those players. To be in that situation where we are in the top 3 in purses going into day 2 and at the same time we secured nine slots in our playing XI that gives us a lot of comfort in how we want to execute."
IPL Auction 2025 Live: Faf du Plessis on IPL Auction
Faf du Plessis will be involved in the auction today. He is in the first set of the day and played in the Abu Dhabi T10 league where he's leading the run charts. Du Plessis is unsure if he will find a team in the IPL.
"You never know with IPL. I've played a lot of cricket in the IPL, and I know with auctions, nothing is guaranteed," du Plessis said after last night's game. "I don't even know what's going on. I don't think my name has come up yet. So let's see. I mean, there's a lot of batters already been picked up. So let's see what happen."

IPL Auction 2025 Live: RR's Rahul Dravid on the signings so far, strategy and looking ahead to Day 2
Rajasthan Royals head coach Rahul Dravid spoke after Day 1 of the IPL auction as the team signed Jofra Archer, Maheesh Theekshana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Akash Madhwal, Kumar Kartikeya.
On the signings so far:
"It's been an interesting day. We're pretty pleased with where we're at. Via the retentions, we already had a strong batting core. With the addition of some outstanding bowlers, we feel we've made significant progress towards building a side that can compete for the title next season. We're particularly excited about welcoming back Jofra to our fold. We feel he gives a nice balance to the squad both in the powerplay and at the death.
Strategy at the Auction:
"With our batting core in place already, our priority today was to build a strong bowling unit, which we've been able to do to an extent with the addition of Archer, Theekshana, Hasaranga, Madhwal and Kartikeya. Our focus was always on having a world-class XI, which is visible in the way we have gone about our business as we tried to utilize the majority of our funds on the starting XI. We feel we've secured some amazing buys and I'm looking forward to seeing them in pink."
Looking ahead to Day 2
"Day 2 will be crucial as we still have a few key spots to fill. Our focus remains the same, building a side that is strong enough to compete for the title next season. We have our targets in our mind who we feel will help us compete next season. Hopefully we should be able to secure them!"
IPL Auction 2025 Live: Venkatesh Iyer reacts to his big money signing
KKR brought back Venkatesh Iyer for Rs 23.75 crore during the auction on Day 1. He said on JioCinema, “I'm really happy. The MP team is here with me, and they're all very happy for me. They're enjoying the occasion, Avesh Khan also got sold to LSG. The most important thing is that I'm going back to KKR, so I'm more excited about that.”
On joining KKR: “The coach of KKR was with me here, he's the coach of MP as well. So, we were discussing, and I was kind of on his nerve, asking him to take me back to KKR. I understand that winning championships is extremely important, but so is player development and backing the players, and when the team management does that, it kind of shows how much it values their players. So, I think, it's a pleasure to be playing for KKR once again and I'm extremely happy that they've shown so much confidence in me.”
On his prospects of being the KKR captain: “Last year, I was the captain in the absence of Nitish Rana when he was unfortunately injured. So, I was the vice-captain and I always believe, captaincy is a tag, but you can always be a leader in a group. I believe in taking all the boys together, creating an environment where everyone feels motivated to play for the team. Eoin Morgan was the captain in 2021, and I was new, but he would come up to me and tell me that we can do this, we can do that. So, I feel that is leadership, and if given the responsibility, I'd be more than happy to do it.”
On his efforts to enhance his bowling: “I have worked on my bowling. I've always wanted to contribute in multiple facets of the game, with the bat and ball, in the field, and in terms of suggestions that I can give to the coach or the captain. So, that keeps me going and that is what I feel makes me a utility player. Sometimes, it might happen with the bat or just with the ball, but either way if you're always involved in the planning and strategies, then I feel you're very important for the team.”

IPL Auction 2025 Live: Uthappa on Ashwin joining CSK
Robin Uthappa was happy with CSK’s decision to get Ashwin back: “I think Ashwin has proven over a period of his career that he's a lateral thinker. He's not linear in his thinking, and he's always thinking out of the box. So, you always want a person like that in your side. As a captain, as a leader, you want to have as many options as possible. With the likes of Ashwin, Ruturaj will get those suggestions and he can be used as a floater, and he can bat up the order to play the role of a pinch hitter as well. He may not be the highest wicket taker, but he is pretty economical.”
Marco Jasen has become the biggest buy at the start of Day 2 of the IPL Auction by being snapped up by Punjab Kings for Rs 7 crore. Krunal Pandya will play his cricket next season at Royal Challengers Bengaluru alongside Virat Kohli with the franchise acquiring his services for Rs 5.75 crore.
The teams spent Rs 467.95 crore on Day 1 of the auction to bring in 72 players at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah on Monday.
The auction process has continued on the second day from Set No. 13, starting with Player No. 84 (now 85), Mayank Agarwal, and go up till Player No. 116 (now 117) in Set No. 17, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth before the accelerated auction process will set in during the second half of the day.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru head into Day 2 as the financial frontrunner, with a budget of Rs 30.65 crore. Having signed just nine players, including three from overseas, they have plenty of flexibility.
Mumbai Indians follow closely with Rs 26.10 crore and also nine players on their roster. Although they currently have only one overseas player, the five-time IPL champions are poised to make bold acquisitions.
Punjab Kings, with Rs 22.50 crore, and Gujarat Titans, at Rs 17.50 crore, both have room to maneuver, fielding relatively balanced squads of 12 and 14 players, respectively. With only five overseas players between them, both teams are expected to invest heavily in international talent.
Sunrisers Hyderabad face a challenging situation with the lowest remaining budget of just Rs 5.15 crore. Although they have 13 players, their limited funds will likely lead to more cautious bidding strategies.
Chennai Super Kings (Rs 15.60 crore), Delhi Capitals (Rs 13.80 crore), and Lucknow Super Giants (Rs 14.85 crore) occupy the mid-tier financial landscape.
Rajasthan Royals (Rs 17.35 crore) and Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs 10.05 crore) are known for their unpredictable auction tactics. With a limited number of overseas players — four for Rajasthan and five for Kolkata — both franchises are likely to take calculated risks and go after specific targets.
