Ireland v Georgia women

Georgia face the Republic of Ireland in their Euro 2025 play-off first leg tonight.

Eileen Gleeson's side are on course to reach a European Championships for the first time ever and face a Georgia team they beat 20-0 on aggregate last year.

Ireland played Georgia twice last year, with Vera Pauw's team winning 11-0 and then 9-0 during the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.

Georgia lost all eight games in that qualifying group, without scoring a goal and conceding 54, although they appear to have improved since through the inaugural Nations League of 2023/24.

Should Ireland come out on top against Georgia over two legs, they will face League B opposition in Wales or Slovakia for a place in Switzerland.

Full-time - Georgia 0-6 Ireland

A completely dominant display by Ireland. Six goals, five different scorers, brilliant performances from O'Sullivan, McCabe and Abbie Larkin. Goals from McCabe (2), Sheva, Mannion, Carusa and Stapleton.

Leading just 1-0 at the break, Ireland's storming second half stemmed from a switch into the middle by McCabe who controlled events. Also, there was bravery from Stapleton and Mannion to score from set-pieces, while Sheva and McCabe realised they could score from distance, which they both did. Again O'Sullivan excelled in midfield, while Larkin's wing play was exceptional. A fully merited win. The second leg is a formality. Ireland play the winners of the Slovakian/Wales tie, with Slovakia leading 2-1 after their first leg, which was played tonight. Roll on Tuesday.

18:59Garry Doyle

Goal Ireland - Mannion

It is now 6-0 with Aoife Mannion heading in Katie McCabe's cross.

18:59Garry Doyle

Abbie Larkin named player of the match

Fully deserved.

18:56Garry Doyle

Goal Ireland

It is now 5-0 after 95 minutes with Marissa Sheeva scoring a cracker, a dipping, thumping effort. That is her first international goal.

18:50Garry Doyle

Ten minutes of injury time

There could be a fifth. Certainly there is time for another goal.

18:48Garry Doyle

All over bar the shouting

So 4-0 up, with three minutes to go, the second leg of this play off is a formality. Georgia have improved over the last 12 months but they are still not in Ireland's league. You can expect another 4-0 scoreline on Tuesday.

That leads on to next month when Ireland take on Slovakia or Wales in the next round of the play offs. Win that and Ireland will be in the Euros.

18:46Garry Doyle

Goal stands

Five minute delay for the goal to be confirmed by VAR.

18:41Garry Doyle

GOAL IRELAND (STAPLETON)

Jess Stapleton gets her first senior international goal. McCabe's delivery from a corner ends with Stapleton getting a touch at the back post. It is now 4-0. The goal is being checked by VAR.

18:39Garry Doyle

Ireland press cruise control

Ten minutes to go here and there is absolutely no danger of Ireland leaving here without a win. They have dictated the terms and conditions of this match from the start. McCabe, O'Sullivan and Mannion have been excellent. The movement of Russell has added a new dimension to this team since the World Cup, with Larkin's maturation an additional bonus. Add in Toland's return to the fold and you can see how Ireland have improved. Tactically, they are more adventurous now than they were then. The 3-0 lead does not flatter them one bit.

18:33Garry Doyle

More subs for Ireland

Jesse Stapleton and Leanne Kiernan are on for Carusa and Toland.

18:30Garry Doyle

Just over from McCabe

Seeking a hat-trick, the Larkin/O'Sullivan/McCabe combo worked out again, McCabe's shot on the turn just went over the bar.

18:26Garry Doyle

GOAL IRELAND (MCCABE)

Ireland 3-0 Georgia

Great finish from Katie. She saw the keeper was off her line. Whacked the shot from 30 yards. Goal. 3-0. Game over, tie over. Ireland will be playing either Slovakia or Wales in the next round of the play-offs.

18:25Garry Doyle

Full-time: Slovakia 2-1 Wales

That game remains in the melting pot.

18:24Garry Doyle

Chance for Ireland

O'Sullivan showed good footwork to create a chance for herself but her shot was saved by the legs of Gabunia.

18:19Garry Doyle

Dragons fire back

It is now Slovakia 2-1 Wales. So as that game comes to a conclusion, it is now not as clear cut who Ireland's opponents will be in the next round of the play-offs. Trust us, it will be Ireland, rather than Georgia, who advance. The difference in class here is stark.

18:17Garry Doyle

GOAL IRELAND - CARUSA

It is 2-0 now. Aoife Mannion pass to Larkin, cross to Carusa, who sidefooted it in. Clever finish. That is eight goals now for the forward.

18:15Garry Doyle

Sub for Ireland

Marissa Sheva is coming on for Lily Agg, 56 minutes played.

18:11Garry Doyle

McCabe raises the bar, Carusa hits it

After 51 minutes there was nearly a second goal for Ireland when Katie McCabe's fine delivery was diverted onto the top of the crossbar by Carusa. It clipped the top of the bar. Still 1-0, Ireland.

18:03Garry Doyle

Second half about to start

So, 1-0 at the break, and Ireland in complete control. The second half is about to kick off.

17:51Garry Doyle

Half time - Georgia 0-1 Ireland

A dominant first half from Ireland, McCabe imperious on the left, Larkin a threat down the right. It was from these sources that the Irish chances stemmed, the breakthrough finally coming on 35 minutes, when Larkin's cross was handled by Danelia.

Up stepped McCabe. While there was a lengthy wait, at no stage did she look like missing.

That settled the nerves, if there were any left, because for all Georgia's solidity, at no point did they look like scoring, Ireland in control of possession from the start to the end of that half. This could be a 4-0 win.

17:48Garry Doyle

Slovakia score again

Slovakia go 2-0 up on Wales. Given how dominant Ireland are in this tie, it is looking increasingly likely that Ireland will play the Slovaks in the next play-off round.

17:45Garry Doyle

Chance for Ireland

McCabe's 41st minute corner is floated specifically to the near post where Patten had angled her run. Her glancing header was well held by Gabunia who has played really well in this first half. Ireland still 1-0 up but the prediction at this stage is that this could end up 4-0.

17:39Garry Doyle

Patience pays off

So, Larkin's cross from the right was handled by Danelia. Needless mistake from the Georgian defender. It was checked by VAR. But no one really doubted that the penalty would be given. McCabe stepped up, stay composed, and sidefooted the ball left footed into the left corner of the net. That is 27 goals in 90 internationals now for McCabe. Slovakia now 1-0 up on Wales.

17:37Garry Doyle

GOAL - IRELAND (MCCABE)

McCabe scores from the spot. 1-0, 36 minutes.

17:35Garry Doyle

PENALTY FOR IRELAND

VAR checking a handball.

17:35Garry Doyle

Best move of the match

Brilliant build up play again from McCabe. She is this team's John Robertson, in that every build-up move starts on the left, just as it did with Clough's Forest side in the 1970s. For this move, McCabe was involved twice, the sharpness of her passing leading to a crossing postion from where she delivered a great cross which Larkin diverted narrowly wide.

No score here; no score either between Slovakia or Wales. Ireland play the winners of that game if they survive this Georgian test.

17:32Garry Doyle

Chance for Ireland

Katie McCabe's cross to the back post finds Denise O'Sullivan but it was a tad too high for the Cork woman. From the subsequent move, Larkin's cross was met by Russell. Gabunia tips it over the bar. 30 minutes played, Ireland completely dominant.

17:24Garry Doyle

Gabunia is on her game

Georgia's goalkeeper has started this game well. She is coming for crosses, preferring to punch clear rather than to catch. But so far it is working in her favour.

17:23Garry Doyle

Katie McCabe is on a different level

There is a lot to like about this Irish team, their structured attacks, their precision passes, their understanding of their roles, but for all the collective strength, the biggest asset they have is the individual skill of Katie McCabe. Everything she does is on a different level to the other 21 players on the field. McCabe's pass to Carusa led to a chance for O'Sullivan. Georgia's keeper, Gabunia, made a fine save. 21 minutes played.

17:15Garry Doyle

Georgia showing no ambition

So Georgia's sole aim here is to keep the score down. Never mind refusing to attack, they aren't even bothering to defend wide areas, gifting Katie McCabe space on the left, Abbie Larkin on the right. By packing the central areas they are just aiming to frustrate and to block shots. So far it has worked for them. But to put this another way, there is no way on God's earth that Ireland will not be emerging from this two-legged play-off. They are miles better.
